Evolution is not a science to so many -- it is their religion, or world view. It's a visceral issue for them. They are evangelistic and zealous. It is a means to act out their adolescent rebellions.
The sceince is really of no consequence, it is about the Bible and God etc...Using evolutionary theory is just a means.
It harms actual science more than anything for them to distort and make an idol of it.

Evolution is not a science to so many -- it is their religion, or world view. Actually, this is pretty silly. It is simply about science. Evolution is the best theory out there at the moment. Full of holes and problems, and who knows, perhaps someday it will be refuted in its entirety, but like the "solar system" model of the atom was in its day, it is the best model of reality we have today.
Not just that, but ID, REAL Intelligent Design theory isn't neccessarily mutually exclusive with much of evolutionary theory. It is simply the Creationists version of ID that does so. It is their proxy in this fight. A silly tactic, since ID theory would allow for ME (or some version of me, in a paralell universe) to have created the Universe.

It harms actual science more than anything for them to distort and make an idol of it. Many don't understand that once you make relativism acceptable, if not the norm, many will see science as something to be manipulated for their chosen end, which will then make many others cynical about science.
