The Finkielkraut interview that is the subject of this piece was posted on Free Republic here: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/1525276/posts. The erosion of intellectual freedom in France is disturbing, but perhaps not so surprising.

The only solution is the complete expulsion of all non-native Frenchmen and Europeans from the continent of African and S.W. Asia back to their homelands, bottom line.

"Mouloud Aounit claims that he withdrew the lawsuit because Finkielkraut apologized, but he doesn't believe the apologies are sincere."
I hope the apologies are not sincere. Finkielkraut has said nothing for which he should apologize. I wish he hadn't caved.

Interesting post; I hadn't seen the earlier rendition. The reaction clearly shows why Finkelkraut thought these things couldn't be said in France. France prides itself on its Cartesian logic, but when the premises are false - indeed when the premises are simply myths - Cartesian logic fails. France is in a mess of its own making and it sorely needs to face reality. A first step would be to listen to Alain Finkelkraut and others like him.

Add one more casualty to the victims of the November incidents in France: Alain Finkielkraut, 56-year-old professor, philosopher, author, and subtle commentator on current events. This humane intellectual has been dragged into something like a cross between a medieval disputation, the Moscow Trials, and an al Qaeda beheading scene, simply because he deviated from the accepted interpretation of the violence then raging in France
and said it in an Israeli newspaper. Bump

State, media, and academia have merged into a strange and utterly intolerant ruling class in France. The EU didn't escape a similar fate by very much.
