Stephen B. Johnson stepped down as chairman of the Richmond School Board tonight. He will remain on the board as the 5th District representative.
In an article reported in The Times-Dispatch last week, Johnson admitted to posting his profile on a pornographic (male-dating) Internet dating site available to the public. The profile, which included explicit text, has been removed from the site.
At tonight's School Board meeting, Johnson drew praise for his service as chairman, a post he has held this year. He also received expressions of support from fellow board members, Richmond Schools Superintendent Deborah Jewell-Sherman and others who attended the meeting.
Some of those who spoke criticized The Times-Dispatch for reporting about Johnson's Web site posting.
M. Gail Townes, who has been the board's vice chairwoman and represents the 6th district, succeeds Johnson at the top spot.

It is the outrage of the week (so far). No doubt the guy is a lib..
Do the voters of Richmond, VA, approve of a pervert and his supporters being in charge of the education of their children? There ought to be a thorough housecleaning, and decent people ought to take the places of these morally-blind school board members.
Public schools=Where the boys are. They are infested with pervs and pedophiles.
The pervert is bad enough - but the support for him is just weird.
"Hey Daddy, I got to meet the School Board chairman and he gave me a lollipop."
Where is my "The World is Coming to an End" sign!
Another fudge packer comes out. That's really something to be proud of.
The thought just takes the flavor out of real fudge!
