My limited experience has been that the Spaniard line provides the movers and shakers of Mexico.  What we think of as Mexicans are Mexican Indians, also known as peasants.

We have illegal immigrant Mayan Indians here from Mexico. They don't even speak Spanish. But most of the brown skin people who are driven from Mexico into the USA are Indian-Spanish mixture called Mestizo.
