Coming out of an election season of relatively minor importance to most of the nation, perhaps not many of us have felt the wave of patriotism, political mobilization, or grassroots enthusiasm that seems to occur most conspicuously only once every four years.
But let me remind you that these qualities and activities do not get put on the backburners in between presidential elections. Whether or not they make the headlines every day is one issue, but the spirit of the responsible American citizen is quite another. Behind every major event or effortand even the ones seen as not so majorare average citizens.
What we at Townhall.com are getting at, however, is that these people are really not so average. This past year, our country has gone through both triumphs and tragedies, and behind it all, there are stories of ordinary people doing the extraordinary to preserve and promote everything that makes our nation great.
From taking action to begin a real debate on Social Security reform, immigration laws, and government spending all the way to making sacrifices for the sake of disaster relief efforts, the war on terror, or supporting our troops, the average citizen deserves to be put in the spotlight.
Thus, Townhall.com is on the hunt for the person who most deserves the title of Citizen of the Year. And thats where we need the input of all our readers.
We're asking for 200 words or less explaining your nomination for Citizen of the Year.
So far, the responses have ranged from elected officials fighting battles in all levels of government to the men and women literally fighting battles abroad to small-town husbands, wives, fathers, and mothers fighting battles in their local schools, neighborhoods, and communities. The suggestions have been as great as they are various.
Weve heard about stay-at-home moms who have been laboring at home on behalf of their other family members. Weve also heard about college professors who have shaped the minds and aspirations of their students. And weve heard inspiring accounts of military personnel who have gone overseas to serve their nation in spite of hardships and criticisms from home.
And we want to hear more.
Tell us about the people youve been noticing in the news, the people that have been changing the lives of those around you, the people who have made a difference this year for you personally. And we want more than mere names. We want to hear the stories of how these specific people are making a differencewhether big or smallfor this nation.
So give this some thought, and be sure you do not miss your opportunity to shine the spotlight on someone who deserves to be an inspiration to all the rest of us.
Please send your nominations here by the end of this week.
We look forward to hearing from you!
I hereby nominate Jim Robinson for your Citizen of the Year.
Jim is the founder and operator of FreeRepublic.com, the top conservative discussion forum on the Internet. Jim recognized the value of a place where people of like mind could come together online to discuss the important political issues of the day. FreeRepublic.com is also a place where real investigative research and discussion can take place re: stories such as Dan Rather and CBS's forged memos, as well as attempted election theft like that in 2000. There are hundreds of similar threads where important facts were uncovered, put together, and used to counter the lies and distortions of the Main Stream Media and the liberal spin machine.
FreeRepublic.com is also a place to organize rallies and events (aka "Freeps") which accomplish important tasks like supporting our troops in war-time, and showing our wounded soldiers at Walter Reed that we care about them, and countering the anti-War protests.
No one still doubts the value of the online conservative movement, which includes TownHall.com and all of our many pundits. FreeRepublic is different though, and adds to the columnists efforts by giving the average American citizen a voice. Jim Robinson saw this before anyone else and he created this website and he has made a huge difference to America by his creation. He has empowered many thousands to speak the truth and in this case the effect is even more than the sum of the parts because of the collaborative effort. For that, many thoudands of us are in his debt, as is all of America even those who never heard of Free Republic.
I hope that you will consider this nomination, and that you will name Jim Robinson your "Citizen of the Year". He deserves it.
Sincerely, Rob
Help spread the word that TownHall is looking for a Citizen of the Year and we should let them hear about our own Jim Robinson.
