I'm with you TX. I should know better then get sucked into a discussion with the Freeper Armchair Generals. Unlike some Freepers I actually know how to call down Arty fire and this Battleship Fetish being exposed here is pure BS from an Operations Stand point. Unlike some former hippys who got macho AFTER they were safely too old to serve, I actually HAVE worn the uniform as an Infantryman. If the weather is too dirty for air support, you are NOT going to be able to spot. By the time you can see the enemy to spot, the enemy is inside the danger close range for anything as big as a Battleship gun so you cannot call it in without killing yourself.

If the weather is bad enough to make modern air support iffy it is going to make GROUND spotting for the BB almost impossible as well. In such a situation Infantry are NOT going to have a lot of reason to call on the BBs for fire support since both sides are going to be holding what they got not conducting offensive operations.

So this is a case of dreaming up excuses for what a certain person WANTS to think is sound policy, not a sensible discussion of reality by people who actually KNOW what they are talking about.

Did it ever occur to you that if the same job can be done by a less expensive asset then you can also purchase more of them? Instead of two ships of limited usefulness you might have 5 or 10 that are as effective and far more flexible? Of course it didn't.
