My recollection (which may be faulty) is that the New Jersey was dispatched to Lebanon after the barracks bombing. I may be wrong on that, but I was under the impression that the shelling was a retaliatory strike.

New Jersey arrived off the coast of Beirut on 25 September 1983, nearly a month before the bombing of the BLT headquarters. She didn't fire her 16" guns until 14 December.
