Before, I used to think the public image of the King was very closely controlled and manipulated by the media and various groups. I thought it was impossible that the stories about the King were true. I thought it was impossible that this man could possibly be half of what his public image shows him to be.

Through very strange twists of fate I have had the pleasure of becoming very close friends with a few individuals who are in turn very close to some members of the Royal Family. Although I have never met anyone in the Royal Family, from long conversations with these individuals, I have been able to catch a glimpse of what goes on behind the palace gates.

The private stories I have heard about the King, Queen, King's Mom, and Sirindhorn are nothing short of awe inspiring. I can honestly say the public stories about their kindness and caring are true. I wish I could tell the private stories to everyone, but unfortunately, what I know has been told me in confidence and can not be repeated.

I can say, for his birthday, I wish the King, his Family, and Thailand, the very best.

Thanks a lot for this. I usually listen to his speeches, but did not this year. While I speak Thai, interestingly a friend of mine who understands very little says he can understand virtually everything the King says. I find him to be amazingly down to earth and a terrific communicator. Readers here may not realize that usually these speeches are given without notes, and are 'off the cuff'.

While I don't feel comfortable or agree with the Thai tendency to deify him, and there are definitely areas where he is open to criticism, as human beings in powerful positions go I do think he is one of the best ever.
