Chouet was supposedly fired in July, 2002. There are all kinds of "experts" going around giving opinions.

Note that Chouet was playing intelligence games, bypassing his nominal boss, and acting against the sitting president (Chirac) and in favour of one of the other candidates (the eventual loser, Lionel Jospin, socialist).
Maybe he was playing other games as well...
