Well, maybe you should ponder the poet's meaning a bit longer: the more interesting people [i.e those forming the society he would like to be in] were, in his estimation, not going to Heaven, rather the opposite. At least that's how his meaning looks to me. And I would not call this interpretation "rather stupid".

But why would he think that interesting people were not going to heaven? After all, all of the highest intelligences and the greatest creative minds of the Universe will be there.

Hell is for people who reject creativity--- who reject, in fact, the source of all Creation. One of the torments there is sure to be: dying perpetually of boredom.
