FBI agents and Homeland Security officials spent the weekend investigating the report of a possible missile fired at an American Airlines plane taking off from Los Angeles International Airport.
Sources tell ABC News the pilot of American Airlines Flight 621, en route to Chicago, radioed air traffic controllers after takeoff from LAX. He told them a missile had been fired at the aircraft and missed.
The plane was over water when the pilot said he saw a smoke trail pass by the cockpit.
FBI agents believe it was a flare or a bottle rocket, but say they may never know if that's what it actually was.
Do the hobbyists play near airports?
I would believe the fuel tank theory if it had not happened when it did and if it had happened more than once. There are a lot of secrets out there, but one just never knows.
If I was the pilot I'd need to change my shorts before I hit the bar...
What's odd about this is that in the present atmosphere, if the pilot had reported white powder in the restroom, or found a pocket knife in a seat pocket, they would have shut the airport down.
But we have a report of some kind of rocket or missile fired at the plane and life goes on?
Something isn't right here.
I've always thought it interesting that cars for the most part have fuel pumps in the gasoline tank and we don't hear about spontaneous explosions, yet we are to believe Jet A in a tank exploded.
Hobbyists don't. Dipsticks might. You need a license from the BATF to buy, store and fly the big stuff. Clearance from the FAA is required for anything going over a certain altitude.
Actually two 737's had their center fuel tanks go boom without any apparent cause. One was flown by Philippine Airlines and the other by Thai Airways International. The 737's center fuel tank design is almost identical to the 747's except in size. Of course the design in all Boeing aircraft has been changed since TWA800 and older aircraft were either retired or modified during D-Checks.
Note: Initial reports on the TAI aircraft said it was a bomb due to the fact the Prime Minister was to be on board and initial field tests said they found traces of C-4. However, later tests showed there was not any C-4 involved.
Try Flight 612
Exactly. There are hundreds of old 747s flying around with frayed wires. TWA must not have donated enough to Clinton in 1992 and 1996.
"Bottle rocket."
Sounds like a job for "Mythbusters" to me!
After the total incompetence of our FBI and CIA leading up to 911 I am not totally convinced they could solve a shop lifting crime. Let's hope that next time at least our military intelligence orgs will be more adept. Hmmmm, miltary intel, oxymoron?
Oh yeah, twas the FBI and CIA that gave us the center fuel tank hooplah wasn't it.
Oops, forgot, we don't need to rely on FBI and CIA for future terrorist acts do we? We got Homeland Security!!!!
Sheriff Taylor and Barney Fife would do better.
When it happens, it will be verrrryyyy interesting listening to the American hating liberals try to spin the event....and watch them as they try to convince everyone that they didn't really mean it when they were pushing for us to cut and run from Iraq.

Thanks for the info.
or his name would be Meyer..
That reminds me of another war story I will share with the Freepers someday.
Richard Clarke dreamt up the fuel tank theory for the CIA. Dang, that guy is everywhere.
Hmmmmm.
