Since it's the other Chicago paper, the Sun-Times, that carriers Mark Steyn, I'm hoping moveon.org goes after the Tribune with a boycott, giving the ST a boost.

MoveOn.org is providing a convenient form for you to finally tell the Los Angeles Times what your opinion of that newspaper is: http://www.moveon.org/campaigns.html

Why don't they buy subscriptions rather than sign petitions?

To carry the analogy a little further, if the moonbats were truly French-like, they'd demand that the Trib mgmt bring in more illegals to keep its costs down...the problem is, the illegals are only semi-literate, and more to the point, even fewer people would read the LA times if it were printed in Spanish...

MoveOn Protests Times, Tribune Co. Job Reductions

MoveOn.org has launched a petition drive to protest job reductions at the Los Angeles Times and three other Tribune Co. newspapers -- cutbacks that the liberal activist group said threaten the papers' ability to deliver "strong watchdog journalism."

Executives at the Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune -- the two biggest newspapers owned by Tribune Co...said they did not expect the petitions to save jobs ...

Publisher David Hiller said the reductions were similar to those being made at many other newspapers, including those owned by Knight Ridder Inc. and The New York Times Co.

"The necessity to makes these cuts is unfortunate, but it's the reality of the marketplace that we are in," ...

the campaign to prevent the job cuts at the Tribune newspapers is posted on the MoveOn.org Web site alongside two other postings -- one asking for contributions for advertisements ...

I love the sight of MoveOn whining about capitalism. Ooh boy, their DNC newspapers are suffering and they're crying in their beer. Americans will have a Merry Christmas while the MoveOn liberals will have a very bad hangover.

The MSM is tanking and the Left is clueless about why the partisan media is shedding circulation and jobs left and right. Bring it on!!!

They don't grasp the sound principles of good PR either. They defend the MSM, which most people loathe and they keep on running ads depicting British soldiers as American G.I's. Liberal stupidity is quite simply priceless!

Are they serious or is this a joke? If they're concerned they could use all the money they plan on spending and buy subscriptions to the paper and they wouldn't have to lay off as many lame reporters...but because they are Liberals and have no concept of how a business is run they'd rather blow a wad of cash just complaining about it instead of doing something about it.

Look, the MSM is paying a terrible price for their mistake of becoming simply a communication arm of the Democratic party, but one has to remember this media is also owned by capitalist s who may be dumb but they aren't stupid.

It is getting obvious, that the self propagating liberal editorial staffs of the MSM outlets combined with the ultra liberal university journalism system is destroying the value of the MSM.

This protest by MoveOn is really a great sign that the owners of the MSM are starting to get a clue that their assets are being destroyed by these people. The MoveOn people see this as the camel's nose coming under the tent. A prelude to hiring journalists that are capable of finding news and reporting on it. Hiring editors who don't insist on being shills for the Dems.

Ultimately, these companies are having to compete against the cornucopia of comment and opinion on the web called the Blogosphere and they are losing market share because they only have one badly outdated play in the play book. They have a natural advantage of actually having reporters and primary news gatherers that the Blogosphere has yet to develop, but even this advantage is ethereal because the blogosphere has reporters on every street corner. The blogosphere right now doesn't have an effective editorial mechanism to gather sort and coordinate primary reporting sources. The MSM still has this better defined and organized and they can use this to create and present a compelling product, but this means that alot of dead wood has to be burnt.

The owners of the various MSM properties have not been faced by economically viable competition that actually starts delivering eyes to significant advertisers.

Talk radio has managed to prove it is delivering ears and buyers and the format has grown to the point that most major markets have 2 or 3 conservative oriented talk radio stations with competing programming. It used to be just Rush, now you can pick and choose all day and find this content by a number of bright, committed and entertaining hosts.

Fox has made in roads into the great bastion of Liberal bias of broadcast television but none of the big three has blinked yet or substantially wavered from all Liberal bias all of the time. MoveOn and the radical Left, are watching in horror as the ownership of the various flagships of the MSM use layoffs to shed Lefties either to stem the flow or red ink or in preparation to finding new voices that can reconnect with the American public and psyche. The owners cannot tell these people.. you have to get more balanced.. the reaction is fierce and breathtaking.

The determiner of whether this is actually a signal of the beginning of the end of left bias would be for the Tribune Company and other MSM outlets to promote Conservatives into lead Editorial positions. If this happens, then the layoffs have the purpose of creating transforming change to recapture readers and viewers lost to the New Media. This would explain MoveOn being desperate to stop this and expecting that they can have an impact. Otherwise, if the Editorial Staff of these outlets stays the same, the layoffs are a signal that the Newspaper business has crossed into End-of-Life conditions, and that the Advertising revenue these companies run on will begin to flow to the New Media as they are able to measurably deliver eyes and messages in an effective economic model.

These people are jaw dropping stupid. I sat for a full 5 minutes attempting to think of the reasoning behind what these morons are doing. What is it they think a news publication will do, due to these petitions? The job cuts are being made to save the entire paper from possible bankruptcy in the face of declining ad revenue, itself brought on by declining circulation. What do the fools at moveon think the paper should do? Raise their ad rates? No, because that will simply drive MORE advertisers away and exacerbate the problem. How about raising the subscribers price? Nah, they are already canceling at an alarming rate and this will simply increase that rate. The real reason these papers are failing is because their readers are fed up with the content and style of reporting (liberal bias and outright lies). Now you would think they would be able to discern this by doing a bit of investigating and then make the required adjustments in the way the news is reported. Of course of they did that and actually became "fair and balanced", I'm sure the goofy move on crowd would still be petitioning them but for an entirely different reason.

Bottom line here is that in typical lib fashion, the lefty loons exhibit absolutely no knowledge of what makes a business run successfully. Trying to explain the business fact that in order for a business concern to be successful, the total receipts must in every case exceed total outlays is akin to explaining quantum theory to your Siamese Fighting fish.

I agree.

Most do not even know how to run their own lives.

It also complains that these newsroom cuts will lead to "watered-down coverage."

What is the old saying? You can't water-down a turd? Something like that...
