Jack Carter, the son of former President Jimmy Carter, has launched a Web site soliciting donations and support for a potential challenge to Sen. John Ensign, R-Nev.
Carter called the site part of his "listening tour" designed to gauge Nevadans' reactions to his Democratic candidacy, which would be the Las Vegas investment consultant's first personal foray in politics. He previously campaigned for his father.
"One of the things you listen for is how are people going to contribute," he said Tuesday.
Carter, 58, said he won't officially announce his decision until after the first of the year, but said response to the site, which was posted last week, was "excellent." He does not have to disclose contributions until January.
The Web site includes a biography detailing the former president's oldest son's move from "Navy brat" to peanut farm hand to business consultant "fascinated by the art of hedging - the use of futures markets to protect profit margins."
Carter addresses his own stint in the Navy briefly.
"By mutual agreement, I and the Navy decided we were not meant for each other and I was released at the end of 1970 with an administrative discharge," he writes.
Carter was discharged from the military after he admitted using drugs.
"I went into the Navy voluntarily. I served my country well, I thought. When they asked people if they'd done drugs I told them that I had. When they asked me to leave, I was not sad about it," he said in an interview. "I have never lied about it."
Carter doesn't appear to have an opponent for the Democratic nomination, although rumors that Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman is eying the Senate seat have circulated.
Democratic Party spokeswoman Kirsten Searer says the party supports a Carter candidacy.
"We have a strong potential candidate in Jack Carter and we look forward to the race," she said. "As far as we know, no one else is interested."
Carter is coming from far behind in the money chase.
Ensign, a first-term senator, has reported $2.1 million in campaign contributions and has said he's prepared to raise as much as $10 million if the race heats up.
I'm sure he was a "brat," but all his family knows about America is how to destroy it.
Keep listening buddy
I didn't know Jimmy Carter had a son. I though Amy was his only child.
I'll pay him a dollar if he'll listen to me explain all the ways his dad is a douchebag.
Shows how much I know. I thought Amy was the only Carter kid.
I didn't know Jimmy Carter had a son.
I didn't either.
Maybe he's been in the closet all these years.
I think Amy is his youngest child.
Reminds me of a Seinfeld bit...
"He's a great candidate. He listens."
"Does he actually do anything?"
"No."
While he listens, I sure hope he doesn't listen to his father, or he will go the wrong way on everything. Maybe he should ask his daddy how to lose an election bigtime though.
He sounds like he's as big a goofball as his old man.
Amy was the only Carter child to live with them in the White House, therefore got all the publicity and attention of our ever-lovin' media.
He has a bad name to live down if he wants to make it in politics.
Hard to polish a turd from that tree.
"listening tour" ???
Clintonism, I presume. More puke for the laptop.
Too bad it would be a thinking tour.
A little more
