I keep remembering the "VietNam Syndrome" which paralyzed American policy through the 70's and even into the initial years of Reagan. The VN Syndrome was a political disease, not a mental illness, which caused policymakers to have an irrational fear of committing troops to the use of force in the protection of our interests. Because the Soviets understood this debilitating condition, they made dramatic gains throughout the 1970's as one domino after another fell without a fight.
For whatever reason, Murtha never transcended this anxiety. He has spent the last thirtytwo years arming our troops and making their bunkers more secure but somewhere back then whatever leadership ability he may once have had was washed away by anxiety at the thought of the military going into harm's way.
It is not "promilitary" to render the military useless, no matter how many bulletproof vests you buy them.
