SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (AP) -- Federal agents raided the office of Geoffrey Fieger, a prominent lawyer and Michigan attorney general candidate, as part of what Fieger said was an investigation into contributions to the 2004 Democratic presidential campaign.
Fieger, a Democrat who gained fame defending assisted suicide advocate Jack Kevorkian, said the investigation was politically motivated by Republicans who control the U.S. attorney's office in Detroit and the attorneys general in Washington and Lansing, the state capital.
Agents from the FBI and Internal Revenue Service raided Fieger's Southfield office Wednesday night, seizing boxes of financial documents, Fieger said. He was not present.
"It's McCarthyism all over again," he said Thursday
John V. Gillies, assistant agent in charge of the FBI's Detroit office, confirmed that FBI and IRS agents executed a search warrant.
Federal authorities would not disclose the reason for the search. Fieger said subpoenas left by the agents said they were looking into campaign contributions his staff made to 2004 Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry and his running mate, John Edwards.
Agents were looking for payroll and tax records and documents relating to candidates for elected office, according to a return of the executed search warrant filed in federal court in Detroit.
Fieger's attorneys filed an emergency request to seal documents in the case, said David Weaver, administrator of the federal court in Detroit. A hearing was scheduled for Thursday afternoon
spokesman in Washington, confirmed the agency's involvement in Wednesday's raid, but declined to comment further.
The investigation is separate from and predates Michigan Attorney General Mike Cox's investigation into whether Fieger illegally funded a $457,000 ad campaign against state Supreme Court Justice Stephen Markman in last year's election, she said.
Cox called a news conference Nov. 9 to acknowledge having an extramarital affair years ago. He accused a Fieger associate of threatening to expose the indiscretion unless he stopped the campaign finance investigation.
The Oakland County sheriff's office investigated Cox's allegations against Fieger, but prosecutor David Gorcyca said Nov. 15 that he did not have sufficient evidence to prove extortion.

You can't search his office: he has free speech! Moreover, he's a liberal activist. The law was never intended for the man on the street, only our great and glorious rulers.
Shouldn't his name be spelled "Geoffrey Fiegerdemocratmichigan"?
"It's McCarthyism all over again,"
Isn't always Geoffry, isn't it always?
HA HA
""It's McCarthyism all over again," he said Thursday"
What's he saying, that as a Dem he's a Communist, too?
We suspected it all along, thanks for confirming! :)

This couldn't have happened to a nicer more deserving guy. I surprized his mouth hasn't gotten him disbarred.
Used to live in MI during the Dr. Jack days. Has he (Fieger) ever cut those stupid long bangs?
CULTURE OF CORRUPTION.
But the shyster is such an ass-hat to society
You say that like it's a bad thing.

"Geoffrey Fieger told 7 Action News, "Ive done nothing wrong. Theyre harassing the foremost plaintiffs attorney in the United States. This is pure political harassment.""
Quite a high opinion he has of himself no?
Looks like he could be Mick Jaggar's kid?
Tell that to Duke Cunningham, pal! He's a far bigger fish than you ever dreamed of being and he was brought down by a Republican US Attorney.
Didn't Fieger pretty much admit a couple of weeks ago that he had given an illegal campaign contribution to someone (either Kerry or against Judge Markman)?
Democrat culture of corruption.
Fieger stated, according to my Michigan newspaper, that "Jesus was some goofball who got nailed to the cross." He was always a "crackpot" according to me, but when I read this, I knew how right I was.
