The anarchists and communists of a century ago were highly assimilated. Old-fashioned Orthodox Jews of the shtetl were not anarchists and communists.

Of course they were (assimilated.) We're talking of perceptions at the time (right or wrong) of the source of the problem.

In fact, as Francis Fukuyama argued in an artcle a couple of weeks ago in the WSJ (one that made more sense than his usual end of history bullpoop), the Islamic bombers in the West like the Attaba boy and his gang, have been highly assimilated too, or at least you could say, westernized.

Fukuyama argued, quite persuasively, I might say, that these Islamist radicals are actually produced in the West! Ouch!
