Why I think we should go back to letting the state legislatures going back to choosing the Senators.. The way it should be..
Going by the party breakdowns in the state legislatures before the 2004 elections, the Republicans would have had the say in 26 states and the Democrats in 23 (Nebraska has a nonpartisan legislature.) The margins in some states were narrow so a few may change hands with each election, but that would suggest a party breakdown in the Senate pretty close to what we have now. Of course it might mean that some particular senators wouldn't have been elected.
