Scandal season underway (Norway)

The traditional Norwegian Christmas party season is in full swing, quite literally it turns out. The parties, known as julebord, often spark scandal, and this year is proving no exception. Related stories: Taxi drivers brace for holiday drunks - Newspapers have been full of articles offering tips on how to behave onesself at the company julebord, but it appears many have gone unread. With partygoers often tipping a few glasses too many, all kinds of things can happen.

Just ask the couple in Kristiansand who wound up under the table, quite literally.

The couple unwittingly grabbed attention when a night watchman on duty at the Clarion Hotel in Kristiansand saw a leg sticking out from under the table. "We thought someone had fallen asleep down there," he told newspaper VG.

'Surprise, surprise' Imagine his surprise when he raised the table cloth and found not one person, but two. "I also noticed that they didn't have all their clothes on, and that they were moving," he said. "I quickly lowered the tablecloth, looked at my colleague and asked, 'Did you just see what I think I saw?'"

The colleague had, and they called police. "We got a report that a couple was having sexual intercourse under a table, and we sent out a patrol," said David Stamnes of the Agder Police District.

The man involved was on his way out of the hotel when police arrived, but the woman was still under the table, clearly embarrassed. Neither the man nor the woman was charged, after the hotel managment chose to view the incident with a sense of humor. The couple apologized when they left and even promised to invite the police officers to the christening should there be any result of the impulsive liaison.

Hungry and angry Meanwhile, in Askim south of Oslo, several hundred hungry julebord participants nearly started a riot when they failed to be served any food. They'd all paid around NOK 500 (USD 85) for an evening of traditional Christmas food and dancing to the popular band Ole Ivars.

But the food never showed up. When waitresses finally brought in a few trays of bread and scrambled eggs, angry guests nearly knocked each other over trying to get to it.

One guest told newspaper VG that she plans to report the arrangers of the event to the police. "There were lots of people who didn't get the food they had paid for, and people got angry," said Anne Grete Hoffmann.

Police, meanwhile, couldn't find any sign of the arranger at the event, but managed to calm guests down. Some ended up calling out for pizza, and spent the rest of the night dancing anyway.

What? I had no idea that Senators Dodd and Kennedy were spending time in Norway.

I wonder if they have a code for that. What is the patrol supposed to do when they get there?

What, pray tell, is a "julebord"?

Wouldn't most just prefer pizza instead?

Julebord is when colleagues at work come together to eat and drink and have fun before Christmas. Hence Norwegian word is Jul.

Well, I deciphered "jule" as "Yule," the ancient word in English for "Christmas," and "bord" is, obviously, something like "smorgasbord," much as what the Danes put on here in Nebraska.

But I wondered if it features certain foods, or just any foods, or what.
