The Roman Republic started in 509 BC with the overthrow of King Tarquin the Proud. It was replaced by Imperial Rome in 27 BC when Octavian claiming title of Augustus. That is 482 years.

Yes! And as far as a 'society' goes, as opposed to a particular system of government Rome went on for ANOTHER 500 years after the replacement of the Republic with the Empire. And if you count Constantanople, it went on even longer.

Will a lesbian cooperative farm be holding out against the forces of the new-right fascist government of Amerikkka?

You better believe it. Post-apocalyptic Amerikkka means pretty much one thing in the heads of the "creative" community - a Republican-generated fascist police state with themselves as the heroes of the resistance. In short, they're already living it...in their imagination.

I cite as a case in point the old TV series "V." The first year was a pretty simple good guys versus the aliens shoot 'em up that was for a time about the hottest thing on the tube. Then things became politically correct and by the time the finale mercifully rolled around it showed environmentally-safe hot air balloons spreading Peace Dust all over the world. The viewership at that point was predictably subterranean.

I could, of course, be wrong, and the networks come out with a series that details a smothering, all-controlling nanny state under a female Democratic president, with a cigar-smoking, tommy-gun shooting hero who reads Ayn Rand as the head of resistance. I could also be the Easter Bunny.
