Texas Woman Mauled to Death by Six Dogs

Nov 27 2:52 PM US/Eastern

THORNDALE, Texas

A pack of six dogs mauled a 76-year-old woman to death as she worked in her yard, authorities said.

Lillian Loraine Stiles was riding on a lawn mower in her front yard Saturday when she was confronted by the dogs, described as pit bull- rottweiler mixed breeds, said Milam County Sheriff Charlie West.

Investigators think Stiles was attacked when she got off the mower and headed into her house.

Stiles had severe bites over her entire body, and a man who tried to help her was bitten on one leg, authorities said.

The dogs were found at the home of Stiles' neighbor, Jose Hernandez.

The sheriff's department will send the findings of its investigation to the Milam County District Attorney's Office, which will decide if any criminal charges will be filed against Hernandez.

Thorndale is located about 70 miles west of College Station.

Okay, I'll bite (no pun intended). What is your occupation?

"But the anti-pit-bull lobby... it seems to me that pit-bull protagonists are trying to adapt the pro-gun lobby's arguments to defend pit-bulls. It isn't working, because unlike guns, dogs do act independently of their owners."

Yes, they do. Therefore, to get at the root of the problem, laws that work toward making it uncomfortable for the owner who doesn't keep control of his dog may be far more effective than breed specific legislation.

Banning a given breed is a short-term solution, as there are other breeds, some with even more potential to cause death or dismemberment, that thugs can turn to for a status symbol, or to guard their drug business.

Breed bans are also problematic, when you take into consideration that it's very difficult for the average person to tell one breed from another. Some people mistake Boxers for Pit Bulls, for example. Labradors have even been mistaken for "pit bulls".

Beagles are killers...just looking for the right opportunity to kill something.

One of our cats would regularly deposit beheaded squirrels and mice directly at the front door. We could never decide whether it was a gift of some kind.

Anyway, cats are vicious mass murderers.

(Caveat: pit bulls make me want to be armed).

I agree. We are way in the country here but still have problems with neighbor dogs that killed 7 of our barbado sheep (a couple with big horns). Hubby went to her and she told him to shoot them if they come on our property again but she couldn't do it. He has gotten two of the dogs since then but there is another 6. They are all medium sized dogs. We eventually sold all our sheep rather than risk losing more since they usually come for a "visit" late at night.

some types of guns are illegal. Full automatic weapons have been banned for 50 years.

Propensity for agressiveness and attacks is greater among certain breeds. These breeds should be illegal. Military and law enforcement should have access to pit bulls rottweilers, dangerous mixes etc.

Historical fact and simple logic supports my point of view. Thanks for the reply.

The dogs riped the woman's scalp off of her head. If that's not vicious enough for you killer breed owners out there, I don't know what is. Rumor has it, that the owner of the dogs was breeding them for fighting which, I understand is common in the illegal Hispanic community. Most also raise cocks for fighting.

Here's a kicker, the woman's body was sent to Dallas for autopsy to determine if she died from the dogs or if she had a heart attack before the dogs found her. The results will determine what charges will be brought against the owner. Chances are, he will be returned to his country of origin and be able to return later.

My family relayed the news about her mutilated body. Just awful.

I wonder who owns the Hernandez home. I'd like to hear more about the history of the Hernandez family.

I hope they get a search warrant for his place.
If he was involved with fighting there may likely be some training equipment.
If he was it would bolster the case against him.

This will make you sick.

If the Hernandez's are here illegally, shouldn't we be sending them back to wherever they came from, at the *very* least?

If you're serious about defending yourself with a pistol, throw the silly shotshells away. If your life is in danger, you need real bullets...

Amen. In the first place, I can't imagine .25ACP shotshells (?) would feed reliably in a semiauto, and in any case I would expect the pellets to be useless against anything bigger than a june bug.

The story about their citzenship is a bit sketchy at this point. We'll be attending the funeral thursday at 3pm and hope to get more answers then. The reporters went to the Hernandez residence on Monday however, no one seemed to be home. I think it really stinks that all they may get is a misdemeaner citation but, hopefully this incident will get some laws passed.

"Shotshells" was a misnomer - my bad. These are those "safety" bullets that are meant to shatter so they won't go through wallboard. Did an impressive job on a cantaloupe. I should have mentioned that only the first three were of this kind, the others were ball cartridges I hollow-pointed. They all feed and shoot well. I'm not looking to take out Big Ed, only his mutt, and I have other backup as well - heavy walking stick and a belted K-bar.
