Gordon ~ British general in the Sudan (also in China during the Taping Rebellion) defended Khartoum Sudan against the Mahdi Jihad (circa 1880). Gordon was killed defending the city because Parliament dithered about what to do (Sound familiar?). When Britain did act it sent a army under Lord Kitchner and a young British officer named Winston Churchill participated in one of the last ( if no the last !) massed European (UK Lancers) cavalry charges.
Ironic thing was Parliament was so slow in acting, the Jihadi leader, The Mahdi died of disease before Kitchner even showed up.

Great Charlton Heston movie with Heston s Gordon & Larry Olivia as the Mahdi !

Also the flick about the White feather is set in this event.
