The federal government may file charges against two men who were arrested Thursday on suspicion of kidnapping. Immigration authorities believe the pair may have attempted to smuggle two women and a child into the United States from Brazil.
Costa Mesa police arrested Reynaldo Eid Jr. , 46, of New York City and Alaor Docarmo Olivera Jr., 51, of Danbury, Conn., at 10 p.m. Thursday at the Travelodge in the 1900 block of Newport Boulevard, Costa Mesa police Lt. John FitzPatrick said. The men were taken to Orange County Jail and held on $1 million bail.
FitzPatrick referred all other questions to immigration officials.

The women, both in their early 20s, and the child, who is about 5 years old, have been released to acquaintances, Kice said. All three were described as Brazilian nationals.
Kice said one of the women contacted a relative in Florida after one of the men reportedly told her they were increasing the smuggling fee.
"They demanded more money, and at that point the relative in Florida contacted someone they knew in Orange County," Kice said.
The women and the child were not injured, Kice said. She declined to say whether the alleged victims were in danger of any physical harm.

The Pilot also reports two Costa Mesa men are being held without bail on suspicion of stabbing a 42-year-old man who received several stab wounds to the upper torso during a fight Thursday night at a Costa Mesa apartment complex among family and friends.
The 42-year-old, whose name is being withheld, was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana and was reportedly in critical condition after the fight Thursday around 11:20 p.m.
Those arrested were identified one as Humberto Vega, 20, and the other was a 17-year-old. Police said the fight was alcohol fueled and did not appear to be gang related.
According to the police report, participants in the scuffle were armed with baseball bats, belts and knives. Some of the assailants fled into the apartments when police arrived. Officers found the wounded man inside an apartment.
And yesterday's OC Register reported the abduction of a 12 year old girl by a "recent migrant's" pedophile ex-boyfriend in Fullerton. The two originally met while working at Wienerschnitzel restaurant. The whole bunch (mother, five children, pedophile and his son plus mother's sister from Guerrero, Mexico) lived together until the "boyfriend" was caught kissing the child. It was reported that neither the mother or sister speak English and language barrier was part of the reason the kissing incident was not reported to the authorities until after the abduction. They believe the culprit, Hermilo Ocampo Morales, to be on the run with the girl and headed either back to Guerrero, Mexico, or to Chicago. The mother has also been receiving anonymous phone calls saying her daughter is pregnant.
That's a new one, for me at least.

Hermilo Ocampo Morales, 34 [photo] -- The police department was unable to issue an Amber Alert because the type of vehicle Morales used was unknown. The fact that Morales did not use his own car for the abduction makes premeditation in the alleged abduction "more than likely." Family members and friends of Morales said he might be heading to either Chicago or Guerrero, Mexico.
Diana Gama, 12 [photo] -- Diana Gama disappeared Wednesday in what police suspect might be an abduction by the mother's ex-boyfried. Police later learned that the youngster did not report to Nicholas Junior High in Fullerton Wednesday morning. The 4-foot 2-inch, 100-pound girl has black hair and brown eyes, and was last seen wearing faded blue jeans, a white jacket with blue sleeves, and a pink and blue striped top.

Mine is oddly written and full of telenovela-style detail (i.e., "Guillermina Salmeron spent Thanksgiving sleeping in her van with her hand wrapped like a claw around her cell phone," "Hermilo Ocampo Morales, 34, a heavyset man with dark brown eyes and a pencil-thin mustache framing the curve of his upper lip, lived with Salmeron and her extended family for two years," and "Then the phone calls started. The first came on Monday, a mysterious woman's voice warning her: 'Be careful, your daughter is pregnant.' The second came Tuesday on Salmeron's cell phone, repeating the same message. Salmeron said she does not know who the caller could be," and so on.)

The man stabbed during the Thanksgiving night fight died on Sunday after spending more than two days in critical condition.
Charges are expected to be filed this week.
