Murtha announces funding for initiatives

U.S. Rep. John P. Murtha (D-Johnstown) has announced that the House of Representatives and the Senate last week passed legislation that includes funding for important road improvements and other transit projects, as well as community initiatives, in Fayette, Greene and Washington counties.

The bill is awaiting the president's signature.

Included in the fiscal year 2006 Transportation, Treasury, Housing and Urban Development, and Judiciary spending bill are the following projects:

• Fayette Area Coordinated Transportation - bus replacements and renovation of the Uniontown transfer station, $1.5 million

• Waynesburg College Center for Economic Development - to provide the necessary education and leadership development opportunities essential for economic growth and transition from a coal-based economy, $200,000

• Greene County Community Center - for numerous community development activities, including swimming, tennis lessons, water safety training and summer day camps, $200,000

• Morrisville - reconstruction and lane widening of the main artery through Waynesburg's business district to provide access improvements and traffic relief. The section runs from Route 19 to Route 21 near the intersection of High Street, $1 million.

• California University of Pennsylvania's urban Maglev project, an initiative that takes advantage of the university's unique topography to serve as a demonstration site to address future urban transportation needs. The project is important to southwestern Pennsylvania in terms of the potential creation of jobs and technology-related businesses, $2 million

• Bentleyville - improvements to the Interstate 70 interchange to address safety and design problems associated with deficient ramps at Bentleyville.

The improvements, along with complementary infrastructure investments in the Alta Vista Business Park, are expected to support growth in this priority development area, $500,000

In addition, the Mid Mon Valley Transit Authority, which serves portions of Fayette, Washington and Westmoreland counties, will receive $1.5 million for bus replacements and to acquire a bus maintenance facility that will both save rental costs and result in more-competitive proposals from transit-service contractors who no longer will need to provide garage space.

Although they differ in motivation, the leadership of BOTH major parties remain unified in their quest to drive-up energy costs in the US and oppress the American people.

I have a recurring dream that one day, before a joint session of Congress, the Sergeant-at-Arms will break with tradition and make a direct appeal to the American People for sanity, common sense and term limits:

I think that is SO true....we need some people that aren't in jobs that they know, no matter what he/she does they will keep their seats...
