I saw secularized Islam when I was deployed to Uzbekistan last year. The Uzbeks had an expression: "we carry Islam in our hearts", uttered most often by pretty Uzbek women in western garb. One felt perfectly safe as an American; Uzbeks said fanaticism and burkas were for "those people to the south" (Afghans) but not for them.
However, it is now being said "the further Uzbekistan is from the Soviet era, the closer it moves toward radical Islam". And now that the idiots in our State Department have engineered our being kicked out of the Karshi-Khanabad base, our chance of truly moving Uzbek culture westward has been dashed.
