GARY, Ind.
A woman who was robbed at knifepoint while pumping gas into her church's van couldn't believe it when the gas station attendant refused to call police for help.
"I ran, of course, to the nearest place," Gary resident Rosetta Heffner said, recounting Sunday's robbery.
Her request to call 911 was met with silence from the other side of the Citgo station's counter.
She tried again.
The clerk's response?
"Use your cell phone."
Heffner couldn't believe it.
"I thought it would be a safe haven, anything could have happened, and he told me to use my cell phone," Heffner told the Post-Tribune of Merrillville.
The gas station's manager said he was sorry about the robbery, but clerks at the station do not make emergency calls from the front counter, fearing retaliation for criminals.
"We have to be careful," he said. "If we call, then there are problems. They can hear. So we use the back phone. We are always helpful to the customer, but we have to protect ourselves."
Members of the Moving Spirit Church, which Heffner attends, regularly use the gas station to refill the church's vehicles.
At least they used to.
Member Latrell Peterson said the church will take its business elsewhere.
"We have eight vans and three buses rolling every day, but we don't go there now," Peterson said.
Point taken.
His lesson would have come w/o me hoping it on him.
I'll bet it was. hehe. Much like the gas station by my house which is conveniently located across the street from the Seal Beach Naval Weapons Station. The station is owned and ran by a bunch of Syrians. I hope the guys across the street at the base know of this, just to be safe.

Boycott Citgo! :-)
It's a Chavez/Kennedy front, anyway...
Why call 911 anyway? The incident was over. There was no more emergency. A simple call to report a past event is all that is needed. It is not as if the police can or will do something at this point. You could send them a letter for all the effect it will have. Sorry, but that's the way it really is. Learn how to protect yourself.
A picture of the clerk might be edifying.
Was the clerk French? |
Well, isn't that kind of like "an eye for an eye makes the whole world blind"? That never made sense to me. It seems to me, worst case, it would make the whole world one-eyed.
Not that I'm in favor of taking vengeance, but a well-started back fire will put out a fire. The metaphor doesn't work.
The promise (threat? observation?) of dying by the sword is not in itself a condemnation of ALL those who take up arms to defend their loved ones or even to punish wrong-doers. In a fallen world backfires and legally mediated punishment (note: NOT necessarily vengeance) sometimes are duties.
/pompous rant off
Note to the idiot behind the Citgo counter: they can kill you any time they want. They have a gun, you do not. Isn't it better to at least CALL FOR HELP and thwart their attempts at crime/killing?
People like this clown make me want to barf bigtime.
"People like this clown make me want to barf bigtime."
No. People like this clown make me want to punch his lights out for being 'stuck on stupid'.
"People like this clown make me want to punch his lights out for being 'stuck on stupid'. "
Yes..and his peculiar form of appeasement will get him killed some day.
Serves him right.
So what they're saying here is if the perp would have used the knife to stab the woman (God forbid) and left her to bleed next to the gas pumps, that the clerk couldn't call 911 to report the crime for fear of retaliation...Someone please post Citgo's contact info. This is just utterly ridiculous.
That is used to infer something other than what it means probably 100 times as often as it's ever used correctly.
Those who live by the sword are the "highway men" that steal and plunder. It does not apply to those who would use a sword (weapon) for self defence. Remember Jesus him self said if you have no sword, sell your cloak to buy a sword...(not that you all didn't know that, but I feel better for saying it anyways...)
Yeah, the guy behind the counter won't call anyone so you're safe!!!
CITGO?? I suppose Chavez will come out with "It's crazy man Bush's fault" and his mud hut dwellers will cheer.
---I agree
