Powell may be to the United States what Talleyrand was to France, serving as a foreign secretary under royalist, revolutionary, and Napoleonic regimes. He may be looking at service in what he guesses will be a Democratic administration in 2009, becoming a token Republican like David Gergen or William Cohen were in the Clinton Administration.

Very interesting comparison. And one I'm sure Mr. Powell would readily embrace.

I categorize Colin Powell as a chameleon opportunist. I didn't care for his performance as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. And I was alarmed by his performance as Secretary of State. Given unambiguous tasks he performs well. But when left to his own devices he seems to be driven by liberal tendencies.

The country will be much better served if his main title is "Former".
