Agreed. Baseball drafts had a ridiculously high number of rounds when richardson was young, and still do to some extent. I think its only 50 or so now, but it used to be even more because of all the minor leagues. It's possible that someone might have believed they were drafted in a very late round and actually weren't.
but wouldn't any team that bothered to draft a guy actually get in touch with said guy at some point?

As someone who was drafted (Dodgers) I can tell you that we all knew our draft number. It was much better known then than it is now.

That's horse$h!*. I played HS baseball and had a VERY outside chance of landing in one of those VERY late rounds. I didn't, and one would easily remember if they had or not.
Its one thing to exaggerate your statistics or say you were a good player when you were only average (or worse), but things like athletic scholarships and being drafted, you don't forget -- and you don't lie about either, assuming you have some character.
