However, the political minefield of the films subject matter the tale of a secret Mossad hit squad ordered to assassinate the Palestinian terrorists who directly or even indirectly carried out the massacre of Israeli athletes at the 1972 Olympics in Munich will be the main issue at awards time. Specifically, it all comes down to how the movie portrays its principal characters: Will the Israelis be seen as too bloodthirsty? Will the Palestinians be seen as too stereotypical? Insiders say Spielberg and his screenwriter Tony Kushner worked hard to create multidimensional characters. The Israelis tracked down and meted out justic eot a bunch of killers. Only for Hollywood could such an endeavor be a 'political minefield'.

I assume the "LA Weekly" is a typical leftist rag, they probably don't recall that the entire non-Muslim world was fully behind Israel in the days after the Munich massacre.

What's interesting is the fact that Hollywood is mostly anti israel and here is a movie showing how Israel did what it had to to avenenge the murders of their athletes at the hands of terrorists. The movie might end up being a great movie but my guess is that the academy will snub their noses at it when it comes time to nominate.

I think part of the minefield is that the Mossad was mistaken on at least one case and killed the wrong person. I'm no expert of the post-Munich operation, though.
