Cindy Sheehan to speak at SUCO
Anti-war activist whose son was killed in Iraq coming Tues.; local reaction mixed

By Jake Palmateer

Staff Writer

ONEONTA — War protester Cindy Sheehan will speak at the State University College at Oneonta next week, according to a member of her support team.

Shay Lohman, who is helping to organize town-hall style meetings featuring Sheehan, said Sheehan will be appearing at the college between 8 and 9 p.m. Tuesday.

After Sheehan’s 24-year-old son, Army Spc. Casey Sheehan, was killed last year in Baghdad, she became a vocal critic of the war in Iraq.

Sheehan galvanized the anti-war movement in August with her vigil outside President Bush’s ranch in Crawford, Texas. She has written a book about her experiences that will be released today.

The book, titled "Not One More Mother’s Son," is a collection of journal entries and observations of Sheehan’s 26-day Crawford encampment.

Lohman said Sheehan and other anti-war activists have been gearing up to re-occupy Camp Casey, the makeshift encampment outside the president’s ranch, for the Thanksgiving holiday.

College spokeswoman Carol Blazina was out of her office Tuesday, and an office staff member said she would not be back until Monday.

A call to her home was not returned.

There was no information available Tuesday about where on campus Sheehan would be speaking.

News of the famous war protester appearing locally has drawn a mixed reaction.

Adrian Kuzminski, an anti-war activist and Green Party member from Cooperstown, said the Oneonta appearance by Sheehan has been "in the pipeline" for some time.

He said he learned about it through an e-mail he received last week.

Kuzminski said the tide of public opinion has turned.

"The majority of American people are against the war," Kuzminski said. "I think that Cindy Sheehan was one of the first people who raised the red flag about that."

T.J. Crowley of Treadwell said he disagrees with Sheehan because of some of the things she has said.

"She’s more anti-American than anti-war," Crowley said.

But he said he doesn’t oppose her appearance at SUCO.

"I have no feelings one way or another," Crowley said.

Vietnam-era veteran George Skog of Bloomville said he disagrees with Sheehan’s call for getting the troops out of Iraq.

"My personal opinion is, I’m not a fan of the war, but we’re there and I think we’ve got to stay there and get that country a democracy," Skog said.

Ed Lentz, who is active with the Coalition for Democracy, which supports the peace movement, said more people need to hear what Sheehan has to say.

"She deserves to be heard," Lentz said. "I think she needs to be heard."

Milford American Legion member Bob Moore said he "doubted" if any Legion members have any strong feelings about Sheehan making a local appearance.

I understand she passed on her "Thanksgiving In The Ditch" gig due to a 'family emergency'....who's to know if the emergency won't stretch until early next week?

Hay, such nonesense happens on college campus' .... I remember in '78 seeing Jerry Rubin speak at my NY campus. He was very entertaining, witty, and engaging ... a nice guy, as it were. If us 'young minds filled with mush' knew at the time that Jerry Rubin and his cohort Abbie (Steal This Book) Hoffman were subversives against America then we would have turned away from their 'speeches' on campus. But we didn't ... it was Cool in those days to be anti-American! Oh well, some of us grew up anyways :)

It's amazing that Cindy, Moore and Galloway can write their anti American tripe and guess who buys it? Americans! Its like insulting somebody, but only if they pay you for that privilege. I guess that is one of the great things about America, that people are free to say whatever they want... and charge the going price.

If she is appearing at Oneonta, it certainly seems like she has hit the "B" list for sure. Not exactly a high-profile site.

We've already heard her! She's a broken record stuck on a bad song.

Oneonta is my alma matre. No alumni $$ coming from this house.

Like Fred Barnes said the other night on FNC....."She's forgotten but not yet gone".

"She deserves to be heard," Lentz said.

She needs to go out to the pasture and join the herd.

FReepmail me if you want on or off my New York ping list. If you go to visit Cindy, think about bringing an appropriate gift.

The Radical Left wackos believe that pieing conservatives is oh so much fun. Could you imagine the wailing from those self-centered hypocrites if Sheehan were pied?
