You may not have crashed your car while driving drunk, but you owe for someone who did - a "bill" from the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department says so.
No one has actually sent the department money for the DWI invoice, but that doesn't mean they've escaped paying for the cost of drunken-driving crashes, said Linda Atkinson, executive director for the DWI Resource Center.
IF YOU GO:
The DWI Resource Center and the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department are teaming up with judges, attorneys, community leaders and anyone else who wants to join the battle against drunken driving. A community forum is planned for:
When 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 2
Where The event tent in the parking lot of Presbyterian Urgent Care on the corner of Rio Bravo and Isleta boulevards Southwest.

The "bill" estimates that each man, woman and child in Bernalillo County pays $352 a year in increased medical and auto insurance and taxes that pays for medical services and financial assistance to DWI victims.
"It is a fact that everybody pays for DWI whether they drink and drive or not," Atkinson said.
Atkinson, with the sheriff's department, has organized an awareness campaign on the financial burden of drunken driving.
The campaign has mailed "bills" to Albuquerque residents with the hope that it will stir anger in people who thought DWI didn't affect them, Atkinson said.
The mailing also invites residents to a public planning forum on ways to fight DWI in 2006.
Participants in the Dec. 2 event will hear plans to distribute anti-DWI literature in areas where the drunken-driving population frequents, Atkinson said. Among those areas are colleges, the construction community, fast-food establishments and alcohol retailers.

Home page of her enterprise:
Ping.
Small change. Look at the web site. She runs the court-ordered live theatre known as "Victim Impact Panel" - paid for by the offenders.
Lots of "grants" available too.
Unsubstantiated rumor - someone associated with this enterprise may also have a financial interest in an ignition interlock enterprise (also court-ordered).
And how much do I pay for illegal immigrants? Why don't you highlight something that is affecting everybody in this country to an extent that drinking and driving can't touch. Unbelievable.
The US Postal Service has an on-line mail fraud complaint form. Hmmmm........
Lets not forget the drunk driving illegal alien who killed a teenage girl last week after being deported more than a dozen times.
In my opinion, you nailed it with this description.
Well, it is soooo unfashionable to be a do-gooder at one's OWN expense.
I notice that they fail to give any information regarding how they even calculated that number. Oh, well, socialism is as socialism does.
Forgot to add, I don't blame this barf bagger from being so involved in this campaign. She probably is afraid that even drunks will drive like mad to get away from her. This capaign is the only way she can get some action.
They've gone beyond the supression of drunk driving -- an admirable endeavor at one time -- and to a whole new level.
You can be arrested and convicted of drunk driving these days, while still blowing a 0.0 on the breathalyzer.
This is not your daddy's USA.
I met this woman today.
She has a LOT of influence, and is dangerous in my opinion.
She struck me as an angry vagitarian.
She has full-time armed protection (female) from APD.
Ain't it the truth. However, it might be your mommy's USA, and that might be the problem.
"I met this woman today."
I feel for you. Was this a planned meeting or just happenstance? What was the subject?
I decided I wanted to attend the upcoming "public forum" she and her coven are sponsoring in order to provide input on how current DWI laws should be strengthened during the upcoming legislative session.
Trouble is, as with all lefty gatherings, you have to "register" beforehand.
I had a choice of telephone, email, snail mail, or dropping by the office.
Since I really don't want these folks to know who and where I am, I went to the office.
How long do you think I'll last, and how much do you think my bail will be?
