Sky Sports has been censured by a media watchdog...
The character, played by an American, Mark Copani, entered the ring wearing an Arab headdress and surrounded by a phalanx of masked men in combat clothes who were described by the commentators as his "sympathisers". There was also use of emotive language, including the words "martyr", "sacrifice" and "infidel" and footage of a previous clash between him and another wrestler was set to music that sounded like the Muslim call to prayer.
After the programme, Sky approached WWE to ensure the character would be withdrawn, and it ended his contract.

Thank God we weren't concerned about German and/or Japanese sensibilities in WWII.

Ha! I bet this is the guy that Hulk Hogan wrestled during his "surprise appearance" the day after he got inducted into the wrestling hall of fame.
Good grief, didn't we have big scary Russianesque wrestling "characters" in the eighties? Maybe I'm too young to remember any liberal whining associated with them...

And he was the good guy. You should have seen the villain!

They used to have The Iron Sheikh who would get into the ring denouncing the US and praising Iran. Everybody knew the guy was a living cartoon. They probably wouldn't allow Chief Jay Strongbow today.

For what its worth.
Mark Copani was born in Jordan, but his father is Italian (and from Italy), he mother was Jordanian.
He himself was raised in the United States from a young age, and he lives in New York State.
If anyone cares, his religion is Buddhism.

Yeah, I guess Disney won't be coming out with the modern equivalent of "

Plus there was Ivan Koloff, Krusher Krushchev and a couple others. They sang the Soviet National anthem at the beginning of their matches. I think back in the 50's, Fritz Von Erich goosestepped around the ring as part of his act.
Always remembered Sgt. Slaughter kicking the Iron Sheik's rear around the ring.

Yeah, Sgt. Slaughter was good. There was also Ivan "Polish Power" Putski. There was a famous wrestler Gorilla Monsoon who was always described as coming "from parts unknown." Anybody remember Cowboy Bill Watts and George "The Animal" Steele?
