One thing I have found fascinating about this particular war and its effect on the military fighting it is the premium it is placing on marksmanship. Some of the journalists report that they can tell who's shooting by how it sounds - if it's full-auto it's the jihad jockeys, it it's aimed single-shot it's the Americans.

I do recall the latest fad in weapons procurement not so very long ago ran that everyone would be shooting stubby high-cyclical zip guns in the future, that "wall-o-bullets" was the way to go. It seems pretty clear that that's not what's working in Iraq.

The lessons of wars through the ages that a skilled marksman able to get off aimed shots in rapind succession is better than hosing the area. Aim small miss small.
