A winning alternative
The Washington Times ^ | 22 November 2005 | Frank Gaffney

Call it the Week that Was. In four days, official Washington was wracked by congressional initiatives that threaten immeasurable harm to the war effort, precipitating bitter personal attacks across the aisle and across Capitol Hill.

Divisions in Congress and elsewhere have intensified greatly. Senior Bush administration officials have responded increasingly with hollow-sounding calls to "stay the course."

I like Gaffney, but to call the response of the White House to this anything but excellent and aggressive is, well, disingenuous.

And FREAKING alternative fuels will not be our salvation. Why won't people get this? By the time we get "alternative fuel" cars out, we won't be using CARS any more.

Some terms from the politician's miltary dictionary.

Faith - a lobbyist is going to pickup the tab at an expensive restaurant
Sacrifice - you have to pickup the tab at an expensive restaurant

Courage - driving to work in your own car instead of taking the bullet proof limo

Foxhole – local watering hole full of young interns

Retreat – weekend in Aspen or the Bahamas

Charge – government credit card

Cut and Run – when a meeting is not going your way, you cut out and run to the nearest foxhole

So true. Alternative fuels will have to compete with the extraction of crude from shale and oil-sands, which become economically viable at around $35 per barrel.

We have some 500 years worth of shale in Colorado, Utah and Wyoming, and the oil-sands in Canada are estimated to contain another 500 years at current consumption levels.

The alternative fuel then, is going to have to be very, very inexpensive.
