I work in a facility very similar to CNN using equipment very similar to CNN. This type of thing happens all the time. We have literally hundreds of computers networked to each other all running assorted versions of operating systems.

The big push in broadcasting is automation (staff reduction). You have a master control room with people watching the automation work. When something like this happens, a lot of time is spent just trying to figure out what is happening.

Imagine flying a plane on autopilot and all of a sudden you're in a power dive. It is difficult to gracefully recover and then assure the passengers that everything is alright and that it won't happen again.

I'm definitely not a big fan of CNN but I have to give them a pass on this one. I'm just glad it didn't happen on my watch.

I believe them as far as it being a graphic placement marker for their upcoming logo to bump out of the live coverage, but a switcher malfunction? Come on, it's a machine, yes, but it's run by a human being. A wise ass director who thought it would be funny to have X mark the spot right over the Vice President's face.
