Woodward Explains Silence in Leak Case
Tuesday November 22, 2005 1:01 AM
WASHINGTON (AP) - Washington Post reporter Bob Woodward dismissed claims that he should have revealed his role in the CIA leak case when he discussed the investigation on news interview shows.
The Post's ombudsman, Deborah Howell wrote in Sunday's editions that Woodward erred by publicly commenting on the case on CNN's ``Larry King Live'' and on National Public Radio without mentioning that a top Bush administration official had told him the name of a covert CIA officer.
However, Woodward told Larry King on the program Monday night: ``Every time somebody appears on your show talking about the news or giving some sort of analysis, there are going to be things that they can't talk about.''
Woodward again acknowledged that he should have told his editor at the Post.
``I have a great relationship with Len Downie, the editor of the Post, and I was trying to avoid being subpoenaed,'' Woodward said. ``And I should have, as I have many, many times, taken him into my confidence. And I did not.''
Howell wrote that Woodward had committed a ``deeply serious sin ... the kind that can get even a very good reporter in the doghouse for a very long time.''

As always, it's only about Woodward.
"I get to be the center of the story if I withhold a key bit of the timeline, that's GOT to be good for some book sales... that is when I write my own take on this story."
Reporters lie to each other, also? Well, well, fish swim.
The media and all their talking airheads have spent, since 1999, spreading lies and their hate for George W. Bush and everyone connected to them.
This hate group has tried every angle to 'catch Bush'. This hate group yells that Bush doesn't respond then in the last few weeks, overseas I might add, President Bush has been responding and they criticize that.
This hate group is so full of hate they are destroying themselves and I wish they would just get it over with - I'm sick of them.
Woodward is looking like a stupid silly sap and to think he was elevated to 'hero' status over watergate.
Woodward again questioned the importance of the case. ``When it all comes out - and hopefully it will come out - people will see how casual and offhand this was,'' he told King.
``Remember, the investigation and the allegations that people have printed about this story is that there's some vast conspiracy to slime Joe Wilson and his wife, really attack him in an ugly way that is outside of the boundaries of political hardball,'' Woodward said.
``The evidence I had firsthand - a small piece of the puzzle, I acknowledge - is that that was not the case.''
Sin? Oh yes. The religion of liberalism.
If Woodward had told Fitz earlier (or if his source, probably Armitage had done so) the case could have been dismissed TWO years ago..
IF it turns out to be Armitage...will Fitz charge HIM with obstruction for not revealing this info?
On John Batchelor a moment ago, a guy from American Spectator just said that earlier before his column... Mr. and Mrs. Kristoff had breakfast with the Wilsons. Why didn't he wonder (as he talked to him in public regarding him (Joe) being an expert in Niger), why he was sent and obviously they knew each other well enough to eat out, so...
Yeah, and if Fitz had subpoenaed David Corn and asked how he found out that Plame had been a covert agent...when no one else had mentioned it (calling her just an analyst)or if Fitz had subpoenaed the 4 other "media" types who said they knew Val was a CIA employee, maybe Fitzy could have saved the taxpayers millions of dollars instead of appearing as an out of control prosecutor with a political ax to grind.
Yes, Kristof has been doing an excellent job of covering Wilson's butt. Time for another trip by Kristof to the Special Prosecutor?
Maybe Wood-head should be charged with either a hate crime, or three sex crimes - for screwing Libby, us, and himself.
Mr. Kristoff we know one of your sources was Mr. Wilson, who was your CIA source? You know, the one present at both meetings between Mr. Wilson and the CIA?
Since the direction and information obtained in the investigation was secret Armitage had no way of knowing whether his information was relevant. Armitage fessed up pretty soon after he realized he could help out Libby.
That's been out for a long time. They met at a DNC event in Seattle and Kristoff's article appeared shortly thereafter complete with a former ambassador and CIA sources.
Kristof's problem is that, in addition to feeding him breakfast, the Wilson's fed him a lot of BS. And the Times kept him and fired Miller?
They also fed Kristof Valarie's name and job description (first outing was not Woodward).
Right you are!!! Fitz has mishandled this from the git-go. I hope it all blows up in his face.
