I must confess, I have been known to use a multiple and long single-spaced footnotes to make my filings "conforming."

I edit a weekly newsletter for a non-profit mens singing group (directed by my husband). The only way I can keep all the information needed to keep this 150+ member group going (knowing where they are supposed to rehearse/perform, etc.) and contained onto 2 pages in 2 columns is to widen out the margins as far as Microsoft Word will allow me and to use Arial Narrow font in either 11 or 12 pitch :-).

Not me, brothers! Same deal exists in scientific publishing: "Authors must use Abcd font, xy point, in their submission. For inclusion in the Journal, there is a 4 page limit, including all references."

Writing the draft papers was a piece of cake; it was the endless tinkering with figures, and editing down verbiage without losing the essence of the points you're trying to make, that was excruciating and caused me to burn a lot of midnight oil.
