Pentagon to Raise Importance of 'Stability' Efforts in War

If that's so, then it's time to permanently increase authorized end strength in all of the Army's components, at least. IIRC, active duty Army end strength, not the Army National Guard or Army Reserve, was temporarily increased by 30,000 to about 515,000.

That's almost equal to the total number of all Armed Forces personnel ever simultaneously deployed in and around Vietnam, the vast majority of which were in the Army, when the total number of troops on active duty just in the Army was about 1,500,000. "When the downsizing is complete the Department will still have 1,400,000 people on active duty and over 900,000 in the Selected Reserves." FWIW, the total active and reserve tally or personnel is now about 2,100,000.
