How common is this when the perps are surrounded?

I suspect it's not, which suggests that at least one
of the targets was highly ranked.

Now, if rank&file members of the Cutthroat Cult are
blowing themselves up to avoid capture, the question
needs to be raised: why?

Don't they know that their legacy media pals have
ensured that detainees only get kid gloves treatment?

Really. Don't they know they can come to San Francisco and get a hero's welcome?

I've read many reports about this occurring, sometimes with absolute no-names.

Now, they are committing straight out suicide without trying to take innocent women, children and men with them. What does the Koran say about that?

It's the panties on the head. I can just hear a raghead screaming as he grabs the detonate button on his belt: "No! No! Dear Allah, don't let them put panties on my head!"

You're probably correct. On occasion, high ranking AQIZ types have blown themselves up with suicide vests to avoid capture. I can remember a few times offhand. There have also been some garden variety suicide bombers that have done the same, although the circumstances are usually quite different.

By the way this played out, it would appear that there were people inside we wanted to take alive. If we were just raiding a suicide bomber safehouse, we would have simply reduced the building at the first sign of trouble. Seems that we were at the place for quite a while.

If they blew themselves up to avoid capture, then they were likely senior level terrorist leaders who didn't care to face the stern music of the Iraqi justice system. Even if Zarqawi wasn't among the dead, AQIZ just lost a house full of important people.

What you say makes sense to me. Either there was a high value target there, or there was info that they did not want to get into our hands. I don't know which, but I will follow this story.
