At least one Arab television media outlet reported that Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the head of the al-Qaida in Iraq, was killed in Iraq on Sunday afternoon when eight terrorists blew themselves up in the in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul.

The unconfirmed report claimed that the explosions occurred after coalition forces surrounded the house in which al-Zarqawi was hiding.

WASHINGTON, Nov 20 (Reuters) - U.S. authorities are looking into whether al Qaeda in Iraq leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi was killed in a gunfight in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, a U.S. official said on Sunday, but a White House spokesman said that was "highly unlikely."

"and just why did anyone on our side hesitate for more than 30 seconds to surround the place and storm it, as necessary?"

Maybe from past experience they learned its best to secure the primeter 1st including any escape tunnels etc.

Publicly threaten to kill the king, die a few days later. Hmmm... What a coincidence!

But it perhaps once again demonstrates that the "moderate" muslim world is not opposed to the "islamicists'" goals and methods. We could've had Zarqawi, bin Laden, and the whole bunch of them years ago with its help.

You don't understand the Zarqawi network. Zarqawi was never a general of Osama he has his own network that is totally seperate from al-Qaeda the origional network. If he was really killed we will know tomorrow because Zarqawi's generals will begin to fight over command of the network and it will be one of Zarqawi's generals that in the end controls the network.

"They won't report it, this is the kind of thing that would try to keep under raps for a big announcement/prime time speech to the nation on Monday or Tuesday."

Good point. One thing for sure CENTCOM is not a sensation news feed.

In order to retain any cohesiveness in the organization, the new leader, or those vying for the position, will have to loudly take credit for some new attacks. The greater the horror, the better. I think the first affirmation of Z's death will come in this manner. The military won't announce anything until they are 100%. How long does a DNA test take, anyway?
