Agreed. The humor is fine, and most of this is funny. But we shouldn't go overboard. Monaco is a beautiful country with great people who welcome Americans openly and support us.

Prince Albert has said that the "succession is secure" ... meaning that, even without his having a legitimate heir, his sisters/sisters'children can succeed him [even through the female line, now, I believe].

And isn't there something in their constitution that the country reverts back to French rule if there is no Ranier heir (male or female) to take the throne?

What the heck, the world needs playboys. It's a hard job, but somebody's got to do it.

I think the Constitution used to say rule would revert to France, but I think that was changed...I believe Caroline and her four children are now Albert's heirs.

Wikipedia states:

In 2002, a new treaty between France and Monaco clarifies that if there are no heirs to carry on the dynasty, the Principality will remain an independent nation rather than revert to the French. Monaco's military defence, however, is still the responsibility of France.

From the U.S. Department of State site:

The Principality of Monaco is a sovereign and independent state, linked closely to France by the Treaty of July 1918, which was formally noted in Article 436 of the Treaty of Versailles of 1919. The foreign policy of Monaco is one illustration of this accord: France has agreed to defend the independence and sovereignty of Monaco, while the Monegasque Government has agreed to exercise its sovereign rights in conformity with French interests. Since then, the relations between the sovereign states of France and Monaco have been further defined in the Treaty of 1945 and the Agreement of 1963.

In 2002, Monaco renegotiated its 1918 treaty with France. The revised treaty has not yet been ratified by the French Senate and entered into force. The terms of the new treaty would:

[1] Upgrade France's representation in Monaco from Consulate General to that of an embassy;

[2]Permit, for the first time, other countries to accredit ambassadors to Monaco; and

[3] Formally recognize the succession scheme set out in the 1962 Constitution, which extends eligibility to the Prince's daughters and other family members.

"Depends on what you mean by heir."I read an article some time ago that stated race was an issue, and he would never be accepted as an heir, because his mother is black.I thought that Euro nobility was egalitarian??

His sisters children can succeed him."The Sweedish royal family did the same thing,no male successor, and a daughter will carry on the line.Curious if he'll have any inheritance rights under the law there.I assume he and his mother(very attractive)will receive some assistance, afterall he is the dad.

So is Monaco a principality and the monarch can never be a king? How does this work? Is there a king to whom he owes fealty? Does anyone remember?

Questions, I have so many questions.

I believe I have read that he has behaved honorably in regards to his child.

The bad thing about living in a Principality is you can't even be King, always just a Prince.

Depends on what you mean by heir ...

This means:

[1] Are you talking about inheriting money; or,
[2] Are you talking about succeeding to the throne.

Do not read something into what I wrote that simply was not there.

In this case, race is not the issue. The child is not a legitimate son of Prince Albert. As an illegitimate child, he is barred from succeeding to the throne of Monaco whether he were white, black or green.

Egalitarianism has nothing to do with the matter at hand. Legitimacy alone trumps race and all else when it comes to succeeding to the throne of Monaco.

It has been reported that Prince Albert has provided for the child. Whatever private means and support PA has chosen to provide for this child has not been reported.

The revised constitution, which has never been ratified by France, provides for the succession to pass to Prince Rainier's daughters and/or their children in the event Prince Albert has no legitimate heir.

LOL. How reassuring for Monaco.
