If I want a donation, that would make me much happier than some useless present. I don't mind at all if someone wants to donate to some worthy charity. I think it is great
I was speaking to people who donate and then tell others that is their gift, whether the giftee supports the cause or not. In that case it really isn't a gift. It's an excuse for the person to support their own cause. Now if you know someone who volunteers for something and know they would appreciate the support going to their group then it would be a gift.
