A MASSIVE 83% of those who responded to an Irish Examiner poll believe that Mayo farmer Padraig Nally should not have been jailed for killing Traveller John 'Frog' Ward.
Out of 496 people who responded to the phone/ text poll, a total of 414 said the farmer, who was sentenced to six years, should not have been sent to prison. Only 75 agreed with the sentence handed down by the Central Criminal Court.
Interest in the case has provoked major debate and last Tuesday, an RTÉ Prime Time programme on the issue recorded its second highest viewing figures ever when 674,000 people tuned in.
Meanwhile, a rally that was scheduled to be held this weekend in support of the 61-year-old farmer has been called off. Michael Biggins, one of the organisers of the rally that was to be held in Athlone, said it had been decided to defer it to a later date.
Mr Biggins, who is also chairman of the Mayo county executive of the Irish Farmers' Association, said one of the main reasons was because of a perception that the rally was anti-Traveller which, he stressed, was something that had never been the organisers' intention.
Mr Biggins said the organisers would be meeting Justice Minister Michael McDowell and wanted to allow him time to address their concerns about citizens' rights to protect themselves and their property. Public safety, he said, was another factor in the postponement as was their desire to allow Mr Nally to have an appeal of his sentence processed.
Mr Nally received a six-year sentence from Mr Justice Paul Carney for the killing of 42-year-old John Ward. The killing took place on the Mayo man's farm in October 2004.
The farmer shot Mr Ward twice and beat him 20 times with a stick. The second and fatal shot was fired after Mr Ward had left Nally's farmyard. Nally claimed in his defence that he believed his life was under threat and he was in the grip of fear.
Traveler?....as in gypsy con artist/huckster/shoplifting/burglar/scam artist/bandit gang?
Isn't Bubba one of them?
a lot of them are "artist/huckster/shoplifting/burglar/scam artist/bandit" types - they're not Gypsies but they have similar "lifestyles".
Please, as bad as the travelers are.... don't disrespect the Irish blood by trying to connect slickus willus in anyway to them.
Traveller= Pikey?
Here in the States, the Travelers now have their own PC advocacy organization, which uses the gang's loot to mount a slick campaign portraying the Travelers as a traditional ethnic group victimized by prejudice. Communists like Worker Solidarity and various academics have swallowed it hook, line, and sinker.
If 83% disagree, then why is this happening? Don't these guys have democracy?
Don't you remember the Irish Traveller who was caught on tape beating her daughter in the parking lot of a Target (or similat store)?
Apparently they have all the democracy that the lords in robes let them have, just like us.
Hah... Liberals are SO naive. I guess the Travelers know who to target next.
Ping. Remember this story from a few months ago?
The first link you provide is the Irish Traveller Movement, dear God they have an American outlet?
Also, I see the tinker godfathers are using the same tactics as Sinn Fein/IRA - lobbying Irish Americans!!
Make that 83% + 1 American
This is a tough call for me. The guy was obviously stricken with fear after being burgled several times previously (along with numerous other isolated or old people in rural west Ireland). However, he did shoot yer man in the back as he was hobbling away. Then again, given travellers' reputation for violence, he may genuinely have feared that this guy would be back.
I am pretty sure one of them stopped by my Father's house maybe two years ago. He was a sharp looking fellow in a new pickup. He asked if I wanted the driveway paved. I told him Daddy liked it just the way it was. He left with no problem but I am pretty sure he was one of them.
I know it's not a clear cut case of self defence, but remember that tinker godfathers regard themselves above the law - because they are, the government of this country have brought in laws (such as the Equal Status Act), that have effectively put such thugs beyond reproach - simply because they are members of a 'minority' group. Remember also, this case is very similar to the Tony Martin case in England, and he shouldn't have been imprisoned either.
Ah yes, tar diluted with diesel, coating corrugated roofs with a mixture that is not much more than turpentine - they are at such scam as well in this country!!
Thank you for your support!
They coated his roof with an aluminum coating. First rain and it washed right off.
