Thousands Powerless After Manholes Explosions Traffic Detoured, Businesses Evacuated

(New York - WABC, November 18, 2005) - Underground electrical fires in Morristown, N.J. Friday morning exploded manholes across the downtown area, knocking out power to thousands and prompting evacuations and traffic detours. The fires erupted in underground conduits in the Morristown Green area along Park Place, Speedwell Avenue and other streets downtown, officials said.

The explosions clogged local streets and had police scrambling to set up detours.

At least 2,000 customers in Morristown were without power, particularly around the Morristown Green and along South Street, according to police. Police were directing traffic at James Street and Madison Avenue.

All traffic is being detoured away from the Morristown Green, the main business district downtown. Businesses located near manholes also have been advised to evacuate customers and employees until the danger has passed.

Commuters exiting Route 287 at Madison Avenue are being directed away from downtown at South Street.

I am at work in Madison NJ, about 2 miles from the "explosions". I did not hear anything, and we certainly have power. I really hope this does not screw up the commute for me tonight! Yikes!!!

About 10 years ago I was standing out side of the Plant I work at in South Boston. I was looking up Lst and saw the manholes exploding, the place was without power for a couple of days, the fireworks were impressive.

The local commies were outraged, Did these commies realize that every wire was taxed at 100% with a 20 year write off. The food spoiled and the rats fumed, I laughed, turn about is fair play.

NOT my fault.

Also, pretty close by in a relative sense.
Been in that area.
The infrastructure there has needed replacing for awhile.

Maybe it's just been a long week, but the headline was funny. I imagined thousands of people standing around with blank or desparate looks on their faces, making remarks like "The manholes have exploded, and we can't do a thing!"

Are "manholes" the masculine version of "foxholes"?

Actually, Morristown is quite capable of blasting itself off the map all by its lonesome self.. especially with the current crop of corruption and kickbacks going on at the municipal level.
I don't have ot put anyone up to it, and that's the beauty of it not being my fault.

That sounds like a very good beginning to it "not being your fault". : )
