it's times like these that i wonder if this Union is even worth preserving...
Maybe we would be better off just giving up on this experiment and going our seperate ways.
I mean, if 40+ percent of the nation consistently votes for a political party that runs on a platform that can best be summarized as "We're Against America!", then what's the point?
How can we come to a consensus with people who think America is a "Right Wing Christian Fascist" nation ran by Hallibutron and the Illumaniti?
And why should we even try?
sorry, just disgusted after the news again.
My advice: stop watching the news. If you must watch the news, watch FOX news. It won't make you think you're living in France.
Wrong perspective.
During Vietnam America was silent and let our troops be dishonored.
This time around we're speaking out and Congress, our House, is rising up to defend our troops.
THAT is worth a sense of pride. That is progress.
The worst part is that they're not against the concept of the Union, of a United States of America. They are, however, rabidly against *this* America, where Socialism (and for many, Communism) are absent. Communists like Joe Stalin were never content to simply live within their borders with their chosen system, and the modern Left is no different. He wanted World Communism, and so do they. Even were we to split up, they would no doubt attempt to force their beliefs on the rest of us. The mentality of leftist professors is indicative of the mindset -- they are incapable of peacefully coexisting with those who disagree with them.
The history of American politics is that it is ALWAYS close, even on some of the big issues. WW II was the only war with overwhelming public support: there was a strong opposition to the Mexican War (including Lincoln and Grant); the Sp-Am. War, including the Democratic Party and many leading industrialists; and World War I (including such diverse people as Henry Ford and Eugene V. Debs). Don't measure the worth of the Union based on the 40% who are opposed to one action or another.
How can we come to a consensus with people who think America is a "Right Wing Christian Fascist" nation ran by Hallibutron and the Illumaniti?
Don't be disheartened. Far less than the 40+ percent you mention make up the delusional, leftist core that think irrationally. They are lost, probably forever. There is a good portion of the 40+ percent that vote with the Dems for reasons that are not rooted in ideological convictions. Many of these formed their voting habits for vague or convenient reasons at a time in their lives when Liberal media was the only information easily available.
The information sources and available resources for debate have changed tremendously now (e.g., FreeRepublic). Many Dem voters can be convinced with persistent, calm, reasonable arguments but it will take time. Political conversions happen far more frequently now than ever before. It's worth the time and effort to try.
