Zarqawi: Amman bombs did not target Muslims

DUBAI (Reuters) - Al Qaeda in Iraq's leader Abu Mussab al-Zarqawi said in an Internet audiotape on Friday that the group did not intend to target Muslim wedding parties in deadly bomb attacks in Jordan last week.

In the tape, posted on an Islamist Web site often used by insurgent groups in Iraq, Zarqawi defended the suicide blasts on three hotels saying al Qaeda had inside information that they were home to U.S., Israeli and Jordanian intelligence agencies.

"We ask God to have mercy on the Muslims, who we did not intend to target, even if they were in hotels which are centers of immorality," the voice on the tape said.

And the fact that they did walk past a lobby full of Americans and other westerners has been established and is well known. Of course, al-Reuters would never mention that in their article; they're just dutifully making sure that Zarqawi gets his message out.
