BUFFALO, N.Y. A new poll shows former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani beating Senator Hillary Clinton if the 2008 presidential election were held today.
The nationwide poll was conducted by Canisius College. It surveyed 455 Americans over 18 Sunday through Tuesday. The poll showed the Republican former mayor beating the Democratic senator 54 to 38 percent in a hypothetical battle.
Clinton loses among voters in red states, which is no surprise, but Giuliani breaks even in the blue states.
Like several other recent national polls, the Canisius survey shows a high degree of dissatisfaction with the performance of President Bush. Only 42 percent view him favorably, compared with 55 percent who view him unfavorably.
Still, if a presidential recall election were possible, only 42 percent would vote to fire him while 53 percent would vote to retain him.
Like it or not, at this point in time, Guiliani is the only rep who is pretty much guaranteed to win in 2008.
It is absolutely critical to the WOT for the reps to win in 2008.
Nothing else matters. If the dims get in and withdraw from Iraq, the country is in big trouble down the line.
I wish Rudy would run for Senate in new york against her. Why take the chance in 2008, if we can cut her off at the knees now and pick up a republican seat?
It would also give Gulliani a national platform, and additional experience with the national government which would be helpful if he is ever going to run for President.
If he is too chicken to run against her now, I don't want him running for President.
I could vote for Guiliani, but I fear that the GOP base will not. According to the poll, he'd still win against Heillary, but I question that, and I also question whether Heillary will be the nominee.
I'd vote for Rudy in a NY minute.
I would vote for Rudy too. Now McCain is another story!
Half the GOP base would vote for him and half would not. I know quite a few conservatives who would vote for Giuliani in a heartbeat. I know others who won't.
That's a big problem, if only half support him. The reality, though, is that the only issues it makes a difference on is gay rights and abortion. Maybe the death penalty. I don't know what his position is on that issue. Those are big issues though. I'm surprised that Guiliani is not trying to make some headway on bridging the gap for those issues.
When push came to shove, I'd vote for McCain over Clinton, Kerry, or any of the other Democrat slimeballs. I'd have no choice.
If Rudy was President today, I wonder what he would tell the loony left?
The problem with McCain is that he's disloyal. I don't care who he is, or what his position is, if he's disloyal to the base, he might as well be a Dem.
Agree....the christian coalition will not show up to vote, I'm afraid, however, I'm cautiously optimistic that the majority of the red states will turn out to vote for Rudy simply because they can't stand the possibility of Hillary for President.
There is no way he could get the nomination. None. Nada. Never.
It's fun to read about, and blah,blah,blah, but somebody reasonably conservative will run against him and win over the base (Allen, Owens ?). No way a thrice divorced ,pro gay "rights" type libertarian will start off any higher than VP candidate, IMO.
If it were between Hillary and the reincarnated ghost of Genghis Khan, I'd vote for Genghis and contribute $100 to his campaign.
As a pro-life, pro-traditional marriage republican, I would vote for Guilani in a heartbeat. He may not be as conservative as W but he is certainly better than Hillary!
Best scenario, perhaps a majority of the Blue State GOP and a clear minority of the Red State GOP. Thats just not going to get you the nomination. Do the math.
He will when he decides to run - the thing is he is smart to stay out of everything right now.
Is Canisuis a pretty well known college?
