What Woodward Knew
US News ^ | Nov 17, 2005 | Michael Barone

Posted on 11/17/2005 6:12:45 PM PST by YaYa123

What to think of the quite astonishing revelation that Bob Woodward was told by administration sources—not Scooter Libby or Karl Rove, it seems clear—that Joseph Wilson's wife worked at the CIA, and told a month before what Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald said was the first revelation by an administration source, Libby, to a member of the press?

Here's the story from yesterday's Post on Woodward's testimony, and here's Woodward's statement, printed next to the story on the jump page. Here's the story by the Post's excellent media reporter Howard Kurtz on Woodward's apology to Post Executive Editor Leonard Downie for not telling him about this some time ago.

Okay, you have me back on board. :-)

But what about Louis Freeh, as the leaker?

I'm sorry, but what the left is doing -- undercutting morale and abetting the enemy in a time of war -- IS villainous. If not worse...

I wasn't thinking about the Left. I was thinking about Colin Powell, and gcochran (who used to post here), and Murtha, and many others like them. People who think that attacking Iraq was a mistake and continuing to stay there an even bigger mistake.

But what about Louis Freeh, as the leaker?

Could be. I don't know we are all guessing.

Did you notice that Fitzgerald filed a motion with the court asking that documents the Prosecutor supplies to the defense be ruled secret to prevent Libby's lawyers from releasing them to the press? Fitzgerald did not ask for a gag order. He asked that the Libby be prevented from making public the evidence Fitzgerald is going to use against Libby. Isn't that strange?

Those documents include all the material that the Prosecutor will use or may consider using in the trial. If it is not presented to the defense in a timely manner it can not be used by the prosecutor at the trial. Plus any documents the prosecutor has that would tend to show Libby did not do it have to be given to Libby.

Why would a prosecutor not want Libby to give the case against him to the media. No defense lawyer in his right mind would give the media documents that prove his clients guilt.

So why last Monday did Fitzgerald file a motion to prevent Libby from revealing the case Fitzgerald has against him? And why not the day Libby was indicted? One reason may be the identity of the leaker is in those documents. And if some of the media talks to the leaker... Fitzgerald could be in trouble.

I think the leaker's name will be known shortly.

Those people of good faith who hold reservations about Iraq are now being used by the left.

The politicization of the war is complete. The anti-war crowd has been subsumed into the anti-American crowd. The Democrats should be proud...

I did not favor the Kosovo adventure. But once that battle was joined, I wanted our forces win. But, in Iraq, for their political reasons, the Democrats clearly want us to lose. The bloodier, the better...

Fitzy is in trouble and he knows it!

Novack has said that he IS going to reveal the leaker's name and Fitzy can't do a damned thing about that, I bet.

Fitzy hasn't got a case, he doesn't now want the Libby thing mentioned at all, and every time reporters bring it up, he looks as though someone has placed something quite nasty, with sharp points, about his private parts and he begins to sweat.

Here's my theory. Fitzgerald had all the logs of reporters who came to the white house for interviews with all the key players in this drama. Well Woodward's name was obviously not on the logs because Fritzgerald didn't question him. So that means he wasn't at the White House on those days. He was at the State Dept.!!

Heck of a good theroy ;)

"Wouldn't that be a hoot? Probably too good to be true though....."

Unfortunately,it is too good to be true. Woodward testified that he was told the information by an senior official in the administration in June of 2003. He was doing research for the book that later became Bush At War.

Here is my theory.

The leaker is Tenet !! If the leaker is Tenet, it means the CIA leaked itself !! How covert can Plame be if Tenet leaked her to Woodward and Novak !!

Where is the liberal media, the Joe Wilson crowd and the Harry Reids et al ......if Tenet is the leaker ??

The CIA is double dealing - big time !! First the referral to the DOJ by the CIA ...then the Tenet leak !! It is obvious Tenet was never in charge of his CIA nor did he know what his CIAers were up to !!

I want to know why Goss (in his clean up effort) did not pursue charges against some of the CIA big wigs !! I read an article (can't find it anymore) where if Tenet was charged with anything - he was going to tell all !! And, why did Bush give Tenet his big award ?? Awarding Tenet was so stupid it didn't make any sense !!

Joe Wilson is behind the referral to the DOJ by the CIA. I have to believe the Bushies put pressure on Tenet to originally find out the details about the Niger trip and then he was asked to leak the details to the MSM to counter the referral to the DOJ. Since Tenet wasn't on top of his CIA to beginning with, the Bushies wanted Tenet to make things right for them !! Ashcroft was an honest broker who realized what was going on and that is why he appointed Fitz !! Poor Ashcroft wasn't going to get himself into anymore hot water with the liberal crowd - he had had enough already !! The reason Ashcroft did not get a second term appointment !!

I want the details of the Joe Wilson CIAers to come out ....they are the ones who deserve to be indicted ...not Libby !!

I can only hope Bob's book will be pro-Bush !! Heaven knows Bush needs help !! Problem is Bush has too much ethics to deal with the unethical CIA, LMSM and the Harry Reids et al....crowd !!

That's my theory & I am sticking to it !!

His analysis is the most clear-cut, easy to understand explanation...withOUT political hatred and hyperbole...than any other writer...

I will always appreciate Barone on election night 2004 for his inabilty to find that big John Kerry win.

Yes, things like that always happen. But the people of good faith are not fools, fellow travelers, or useful idiots. Not this time.

Open and public discussion of difficult issues during difficult times is our way. It has its down-side as you point out. But I continue to have faith in it...and we've all noticed that modern communications have much reduced the power of the liberal media elite so that all voices are heard. Democracy is messy and contentious but - so far - has proven to be better than all competing systems.

I can't read the thread but did read the entire article and think that Barone has written a sensible and well thought out thesis about this entire matter and what is happening behind the scenes.

I thought the ending was stunning:

Barone: I recall that some years ago Sen. Daniel Patrick Moynihan argued that the CIA should be abolished, and I argued that that was a ridiculous and irresponsible position. As usual when Pat and I disagreed, Pat turned out to be right.

Barone is always a pleasure to read or listen to... there's isn't an ounce of BS in his sober, political analysis.

The only 'cabal'... of which Colin Powell's Chief of Staff refers to... is the treasonous alliance between the MSM, the DNC... and the CIA.

Lets pray it doesn't take a civil-war to break it up.

My bet is Powell, Armitage, or Wilkerson at State. I am sure that once the Pincus and Kristof articles came out, the search was on for the name of this mysterious former US ambassador who had visited Africa on behalf of the CIA.
