First, some selected quotes from above:

"Congressman Murtha is so well-respected for his first-hand knowledge of military and defense issues that he has been a trusted adviser to presidents of both parties on military and defense issues and is one of the most effective advocates for the national defense in the country. He is ranking member and former chairman of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, a Vietnam combat veteran and a retired Marine Corps colonel with 37 years of service, a rare combination of experience that enables him to understand defense and military operations from every perspective. "

"Murtha rose through the ranks of the Marine Corps from private to colonel. He left college in 1952 to join the Marines and serve in the Korean War. He later attended Officer Candidate School and, after retiring to the part-time Marine Reserves and attending the University of Pittsburgh on the G.I. Bill, volunteered for service in Vietnam War and won a Bronze Star medal for valor. He retired from Marine Reserve as a colonel in 1990.

With a life like that so dedicated to America, I believe he needs to be heard. He is the only Combat Vietnam Vet in the House, right? What are his reasons?"

Next, a question: why does the pro-war right constantly attack actual combat veterans as cowards? I saw this in response to Kerry's campaign, in the discussion of Anthony Swofford's book Jarhead and now in response to Murtha. Many on the right constantly complain that Democrats are insulting or demoralizing our troops. Yet, what I see is that veterans of the most important recent conflicts: Desert Storm, Vietnam, Korea are denigrated, their military service called into question--simply because of disagreement about politics. Argue a point--cause I know you are capable of more than reactionary insults.

I watched Murthra on Meet the Press this morning, expecting him to backtrack or say the Republicans misused his idea. But he said we should start withdrawal immediately and in six months have every soldier out of Iraq.

Does the old fool realize that he voted against that very thing on Friday night? I was just agog at his stupidity.
