Don't know. He received a bronze star and two purple hearts - it is unclear if they were received for Kerry-style activity or military activity.

We won and Saddam lost = Mission Accomplished. Time to bring the troops home and let the Iraqis govern themselves.

How can a fellow Freeper even say that? What do you think would happen if we pulled out now? Those who have stood with us will be slaughtered in the streets! America's word will mean nothing, America will appear weak. Surrendering now will leave a stain on America that may never wash away.

Please people, we must look at history and realize we have an obligation to protect freedom and provide a free future for our children.

Can you imagine if America had cut and run in WWII? What would the world look like if we had?

Complete and total victory is the only option in Iraq.

I know you are a patriot...please rethink your position.

There were many Americans who didn't want us involved in the second world war. Lindbergh, and assorted other America firsters. They felt that the jews weren't worth rescuing and the rest of europe was europe's problem.

I can understand when people say that we should stay out of world affairs....at times I wish we could....but we all know that is impossible. As a beacon of freedom we have an obligation to help others attain freedom.

More importantly, we must defend freedom when it is attacked, as it was on 9-11.

Those Americans that were against freeing Europe were WRONG...history shows that now. Let us be on the RIGHT side of history.

The modern Democrat party would have us bring the troops home after the staggering casualties at Okinawa...even though that horrendous battle occurred just as the Allies were winning the war. The Democrat leadership will stop at nothing to try to regain power.

"Time to bring the troops home and let the Iraqis govern themselves"

hey, Willie, if we were to "bug out" now there would be anarchy and civil war and the terrorists would claim victory and we would then start fighting the terrorists in Boston, Baltimore and Brooklyn instead of Baghdad!

let us know when you are ready to enlist? LOL

Thomas Paine.
"These are the times that try men's souls. The summer soldier and the sunshine patriot will, in this crisis, shrink from the service of his country; but he that stands now, deserves the thanks of man and woman. Tyranny, like hell, is not easily conquered; yet we have this consolation with us, that the harder the conflict the more glorious the triumph. What we obtain too cheap we esteem too lightly; it is dearness only that gives everything its value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an article as freedom should not be highly rated."

"He later attended Officer Candidate School and, after retiring to the part-time Marine Reserves and attending the University of Pittsburgh on the G.I. Bill, volunteered for service in Vietnam War and won a Bronze Star medal for valor. He retired from Marine Reserve as a colonel in 1990."

First, no one said he is not entitled to his opinion.

Second: Many people joined up in the Korean War era, later attended Officer Candidate School, served in the reserves, went to college, served in Vietnam, received well deserved medals and they (A)strongly disagree with Murtha; and (B)know that regardless of their military experience niether they NOR Murtha are military strategic experts. His military experience is not a substitute for intelligence, integrity or thoughtful regard for the consequences of his actions.

Third: Murtha's statements about military conditions on the ground in Iraq are patently false because they are totally contrary to the facts on the ground. Zarqawi was booted out of Falluja (finally) and since then he has been chased to the border area of Syria, north along that border, back into Mosul and Tikrit and recently is thought to have found sanctuary among the Salafists in the suburbs of Baghdad. His hit on Jordan is not a widening of his operations, it is an attempt to demonstrate to the former Iraqi Baathist that fled to Jordan (and who work with hin from Jordan) that they and he can make a new base in Jordan when he has no safe haven's left in Iraq. He has not stopped anything on the democracy project in Iraq and he knows that as long as we do not cut and run he cannot succeed there. His success requires our departure.

Fourth: Murtha is wrong about who is the target in Iraq. He claims our soldiers are the target. That is false. The fact that our troops get targeted by the terrorists does not substantiate the claim that we "are the target".

The terrorists have these primary targets:

- the Iraqi people - who have been murdered by the terrorists in numbers far exceeding anything we have suffered;

- Iraqi democracy - which, in spite of all the problems continues to build;

- and Congressman Murtha.

Yes, Congressman Murtha and all the other people in Congress are among the prime targets of the terrorists. Yet, between the Iraqi people, the Iraqi democracy movement and Congressman Murtha he is the only one who fails to understand that and he, not the Iraqis, is willing to cave to the demands of the terrorists. The terrorists want us out because they want to kill Iraq's democracy in its infancy, period. Obviously, so does Congressman Murtha.

Fifth: Murtha is wrong in his claim that the insurgency is growing and getting stronger. That is false. No matter how many Iraqi's are murdered by the terrorists while waiting in line to join the police and military forces, the numbers of new recruits keeps growing. No matter how many Iraqi politicians get assassinated, more step in to take their place. The scope of the insurgency is 90% within three Iraqi provinces out of eighteen. The local people in more and more towns across Iraq, including the three Sunni prvinces, continue to turn in information on the whereabouts of hiding terrorists. The most popular evenning TV program is an "Americas Most Wanted" style program where captured terrorists are publicly interrogated and humuliated on the air. The majority of the Sunnis are now forming political parties to contend for seats in a new Iraqi congress, that their former Baathist leaders could not stop from coming into being. Zarqawi is losing his potential among the moderate Sunnis and a minority of the Sunnis are the sole source of any "aid and confort" he gets.

Murtha has no immunity to criticism of his views, no matter what his life experience has been.

Murtha is playing politics with people's lives. He has picked up the "exit now" agenda out of pure political expediency to run with as a political wedge issue in 2006 - and that is the principle reason for his unprincipled, dangerous attack on the mission of fulfilling the committments that we are now making to the Iraqi people.

Its now "popular" to be an "exit now" politician. Murtha has no integrity what so ever. He deserves to be drafted into the most active combat unit we have in Iraq, with his speech from the floor of congress in hand. Let him hold that speech up as his white flag, while his jeep heads down the highways of Iraq. I think the terrorists will gladly honor the death wish he wants to impose on Iraq.

"He remained in the Reserves after his discharge from active duty until he volunteered for Vietnam in 1966-67, receiving the Bronze Star with Combat "V", two Purple Hearts and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. He remained in the Reserves until his retirement."

http://www3.capwiz.com/c-span/webreturn/?url=http://www.house.gov%2Fmurtha

Congressman Murtha is so well-respected for his first-hand knowledge of military and defense issues that he has been a trusted adviser to presidents of both parties on military and defense issues and is one of the most effective advocates for the national defense in the country. He is ranking member and former chairman of the Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, a Vietnam combat veteran and a retired Marine Corps colonel with 37 years of service, a rare combination of experience that enables him to understand defense and military operations from every perspective.

He learned about military service from the bottom up, beginning as a raw recruit when he left Washington and Jefferson College in 1952 to join the Marines out of a growing sense of obligation to his country during the Korean War. There he earned the American Spirit Honor Medal, awarded to fewer than one in 10,000 recruits. He rose through the ranks to become a drill instructor at Parris Island and was selected for Officer Candidate School at Quantico, Virginia. He then was assigned to the Second Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina. In 1959, Captain Murtha took command of the 34th Special Infantry Company, Marine Corps Reserves, in Johnstown. He remained in the Reserves after his discharge from active duty until he volunteered for Vietnam in 1966-67, receiving the Bronze Star with Combat "V", two Purple Hearts and the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry. He remained in the Reserves until his retirement. This first-hand knowledge of military and defense issues has made him a trusted adviser to presidents of both parties and one of the most effective advocates for the national defense in Washington. At the request of Presidents and Speakers of the House, he served as chairman of delegations monitoring elections in the Philippines, El Salvador, Panama and Bosnia.

He was awarded the Navy Distinguished Service Medal by the Marine Corps Commandant when he retired from the Marines.

None of that tells me anything other than he has been in Congress too long, and none of that changes the fact that his statements deny the facts on the ground in Iraq, and if we take your comments as suggestive of his integrity, then, as I previously said, he knows the facts are contrary to what he says are the conditions in Iraq and he is just using the "exit now" agenda for his own personal, dangerous political purposes.

He should be criticized for the stupidly wrong opinion he is free to have, and he should be shamed for putting politics above the national interest.

I will add J&&&^^*ngK to his middle name.

I think you need to put your money where your mouth is. If you don't like the job he is doing in PA's 12th, then run against him. You and the rest of his constituents can decide.

Already put a check in the mail to a Republican in his district, with instructions to spend it in anyway needed against Murtha. I am sure it will not be the first. We intend to highlight his embrace of the Cindy Sheehan agenda, because that is exactly what it is. You are known by who you sleep with.

Good. Murtha is a coward. Perhaps Republican colleagues and cetain other persons can remind him that it is not safe for anyone to talk like he does. He is not expected to run for re-election due to health issues.

"Good. Murtha is a coward. Perhaps Republican colleagues and cetain other persons can remind him that it is not safe for anyone to talk like he does. He is not expected to run for re-election due to health issues."

So,

(1)knowing he is not going to run, and

(2)knowing the media and the public would ignore his numerous prior anti-war statements (timid vote yes - with reservations - on use of force resolution, and then anti-war statements every year since)

one can bet that Reid and Pelosi sent him on his media stunt, saying to Murtha:

"Look people have forgotten how anti-war you already became a long time ago, and with your military background, with Bush's poll numbers down, with him out of the country, with the bombing in Jordan, we need someone like you to go out there and make a big "we should get out now" media hit. The weekend is coming and it will give us something for our agenda on Sunday morning with the talking heads on TV. And besides, you're not running again so you don't have to worry so much about any backlash, as some other memeber might. Do it for the party."

And Pelosi has the audacity to call the vote in the house last nite a "political stunt". The Dims are truly treacherous human beings who will imperil our nation with ease, if they think it will advance their cause.
