CHENEY FIGHTS BACK Wed Nov 16 2005 18:56:46 ET Excerpts As Prepared For Delivery Tonight by Vice President Cheney
THE VICE PRESIDENT: "As most of you know, I have spent a lot of years in public service, and first came to work in Washington, D.C. back in the late 1960s. I know what its like to operate in a highly charged political environment, in which the players on all sides of an issue feel passionately and speak forcefully.
In such an environment people sometimes lose their cool, and yet in Washington you can ordinarily rely on some basic measure of truthfulness and good faith in the conduct of political debate. But in the last several weeks we have seen a wild departure from that tradition.
And the suggestion thats been made by some U. S. senators that the President of the United States or any member of this Administration purposely misled the American people on pre-war intelligence is one of the most dishonest and reprehensible charges ever aired in this city...
Some of the most irresponsible comments have, of course, come from politicians who actually voted in favor of authorizing force against Saddam Hussein. These are elected officials who had access to the intelligence, and were free to draw their own conclusions.
They arrived at the same judgment about Iraqs capabilities and intentions that was made by this Administration and by the previous Administration. There was broad-based, bipartisan agreement that Saddam Hussein was a threat that he had violated U.N. Security Council Resolutions and that, in a post-9/11 world, we couldnt afford to take the word of a dictator who had a history of WMD programs, who had excluded weapons inspectors, who had defied the demands of the international community, who had been designated an official state sponsor of terror, and who had committed mass murder.
Those are facts.
What were hearing now is some politicians contradicting their own statements and making a play for political advantage in the middle of a war. The saddest part is that our people in uniform have been subjected to these cynical and pernicious falsehoods day in and day out. American soldiers and Marines are out there every day in dangerous conditions and desert temperatures conducting raids, training Iraqi forces, countering attacks, seizing weapons, and capturing killers and back home a few opportunists are suggesting they were sent into battle for a lie.
The President and I cannot prevent certain politicians from losing their memory, or their backbone but were not going to sit by and let them rewrite history.
Were going to continue throwing their own words back at them. And far more important, were going to continue sending a consistent message to the men and women who are fighting the war on terror in Iraq, Afghanistan, and many other fronts.
We can never say enough how much we appreciate them, and how proud they make us. They and their families can be certain: That this cause is right and the performance of our military has been brave and honorable and this nation will stand behind our fighting forces with pride and without wavering until the day of victory.
Developing...
My sister took along her young son but he's old enough that he'll NEVER forget the day he saw President Bush. President Bush was in Alaska this week and oh how I wish I could have seen him. He gave another EXCELLENT speech and the troops rejoiced.
"Frankly, unless we get news like that, I'm sickened and devastated that this administration will not defend itself and demand the truth be told in public discourse. This negative democrat & MSM drumbeat is being trumpeted around the world & it needs to STOP NOW!"
I agree. (by the way, I presume you know Weldon has been on Savage for hours.)
The way I see it, Bush way into some kind of euphoria after the election and lost touch with reality. then, when his fantasies didn't come through (such as Social Security reform), and then Katrina hit and everything, he seemed to go into some kind of psychological tailspin, along with ideological backpedaling.
He's getting better now, but the thing is, Bush needs some serious help running this country. I didn't see Cheney tonight, but I'm willing to bet, he compromised his health just a little bit to do what needed to be done. I really think he's doing that all the time now, whenever he's vigorous.
And consider this, Rumsfeld is like 77 years old. he's the one who made the Iraqi invasion work, when things fell apart, when Colin Powell stabbed us in the back, when we had one quarter of our army tied up and made unavailable in Turkey---Rumsfeld pushed it through. I believe he wanted to give way and let Wolfowitz takeover, but after Wolfowitz made so many mistakes, he just had to exit quietly.
I really think that Iraqi war took an awful lot of Rumsfeld. his performance was great, but 77 is still 77. I don't think his performance as the war has been great.
I think Cheney should focus his remeaning stretch on recruiting two or three really top people, for the inner White House team. Above all, they would need to be smart, truly conservative, and people Bush likes. Those things would be more important than experience to me.
Rumsfeld looked very very old and very very tired in his latest appearance. This week or last week. Can't remember the event.
Running the governement in these precarious times, when evil men wait in the shadows to do their backstabbing, takes its toll.
This was your son? I'm heartbroken to read about your loss. It angers me that we lose such fine men. And to lose them fighting against those that aren't worthy of human value angers me even more.
These are the barbarians at the gate. That we must lose even one fine man for a thousand of them still seems like such a cost. And yet it is.
There will be no words that will make your loss make sense. Only time. The widow that lost a husband at Normandy suffered a loss that no politic could fathom or explain.
But the people gained there, too. A grateful nation gained there. And those that do not have to stand a post, and do not have to stand on that wall, owe that debt of gratitude to those that did, those that submitted themselves to destiny.
But the Nation remembers. I remember. I do not forget the sacrifice.
AWESOME!!!
Damn, Dick. Clean their Commie Clocks. EVERY hour on the hour. This MUST not stop. Kick their ass, baby....
Thanks, I was trying to listen to what he said but couldn't hear him for us laughing over the pathetic look he had on his face.
:)
If I am correct, I believe that it was President Bush who came out swinging before VP Dick Cheney did. :)
LOL!!! That's really funny! I have not seen that before. Thanks.
:-)
"Speak softly, but carry a big stick" sounds just about right. I know he was not one of us, but a damn good President never the less.
New Documents Reveal Saddam Hid WMD, Was Tied to Al QaidaReprinted from NewsMax.com

Recently discovered Iraqi documents now being translated by U.S. intelligence analysts indicate that Saddam Hussein's government made extensive plans to hide Iraq's weapons of mass destruction before the U.S. invasion in March 2003 - and had deep ties to al Qaida before the 9/11 attacks.
The explosive evidence was discovered among "millions of pages of documents" unearthed by the Iraq Survey Group weapons search team, reports the Weekly Standard's Stephen Hayes.
In the magazine's Nov. 21 issue, Hayes reveals that the document cache now being examined contains "a thick stew of reports and findings from a variety of [Iraqi] intelligence agencies and military units."
Though the Pentagon has so far declined to make the bombshell papers public, Hayes managed to obtain a list of titles on the reports.
Topics headlined in the still embargoed Iraqi documents include:
Chemical Agent Purchase Orders (Dec. 2001)
Formulas and information about Iraq's Chemical Weapons Agents
Locations of Weapons/Ammunition Storage (with map)
Denial and Deception of WMD and Killing of POWs
Ricin research and improvement
Chemical Gear for Fedayeen Saddam
Memo from the [Iraqi Intelligence Service] to Hide Information from a U.N. Inspection team (1997)
Iraq Ministry of Defense Calls for Investigation into why documents related to WMD were found by UN inspection team
Correspondence between various Iraq organizations giving instructions to hide chemicals and equipment
Correspondence from [Iraqi Intelligence Service] to [the Military Industrial Commission] regarding information gathered by foreign intelligence satellites on WMD (Dec. 2002) Cleaning chemical suits and how to hide chemicals
[Iraqi Intelligence Service] plan of what to do during UNSCOM inspections (1996)
Still other reports suggest that Iraq's ties to al Qaida were far deeper than previously known, featuring headlines like:
Secret Meeting with Taliban Group Member and Iraqi Government (Nov. 2000)
Document from Uday Hussein regarding Taliban activity
Possible al Qaeda Terror Members in Iraq
Iraqi Effort to Cooperate with Saudi Opposition Groups and Individuals
Iraqi Intel report on Kurdish Activities: Mention of Kurdish Report on al Qaeda - reference to al Qaeda presence in Salman Pak
[Iraqi Intelligence Service] report on Taliban-Iraq Connections Claims
Money Transfers from Iraq to Afghanistan
While the document titles sound stunning enough to turn the Iraq war debate on its head, Hayes cautions that it's hard to know for certain until the full text is available.
It's possible, he writes, "that the 'Document from Uday Hussein regarding Taliban activity' was critical of one or another Taliban policies. But it's equally possible, given Uday's known role as a go-between for the Iraqi regime and al Qaeda, that something more nefarious was afoot."
"What was discussed at the 'Secret Meeting with Taliban Group Member and Iraqi Government' in November 2000? It could be something innocuous. Maybe not. But it would be nice to know more."
Hayes also notes that an additional treasure trove of evidence on Saddam Hussein's support for al Qaida may be lost forever.
"When David Kay ran the Iraq Survey Group searching for weapons of mass destruction, he instructed his team to ignore anything not directly related to the regime's WMD efforts," he reports.
"As a consequence, documents describing the regime's training and financing of terrorists were labeled 'No Intelligence Value' and often discarded, according to two sources."

I am thrilled beyond belief to see both President Bush and Vice President Cheney fight back. I don't think it's too late, it's just perfect. Our men and women in uniform do NOT deserve to hear politicians running around trying to rewrite history.
Just when I was becoming a bit down about everything, this has really energized me.
Same here. I hope W and the VP keep it up! And let members of their administration get out there and fight too.

I sure wish I could find this article on the NewsMax site - are you able to provide a link? I searched under various key words without any luck.
I agree, but don't forget LOYALTY. Not only does our President demand it, but whoever is recruited needs to be vetted carefully. Daddy Bush did prepare his son well for the slings and arrows of Washington, but like daddy Bush 41, his son (43), also gets a failing grade in the communication department.
Hopefully Cheney & Rove are sounding an alarm that Bush will finally take seriously and acknowledge. It is disgraceful that endless democrat lies and attacks have gone unanswered for months now and have resulted in horrible approval numbers for our President, and all while the world and our soldiers are watching.
